I finished season 2 of Battlestar Galactica last night.
I'm sorry to say that, while I do think it's a good show, I still don't get what the "best show ever" is all about. I just don't find myself in the middle of it, it can't make me happy or sad or rage or fear for the characters. I guess BSG and I have built a solid friendship but I just haven't fallen in love. I'm watching it and it's entertaining and I enjoy it and I think it has solid and intelligent storylines but that's it. That's okay, of course. That's the sort of relationship I have with a few shows I watch. You just won't find me writing long, thoughtful reviews and metas about it anytime soon.

But I have a few thoughts on the characters:
I still want to draw hearts around Helo. He's such a sweetheart.
I feel that I can sum Kara up by saying that she is pretty much a female version of Dean.
Lee is boring me. There is nothing about this character that I find just remotely interesting.
I don't think there's anyone I'd rather see in charge of the fleet than Admiral Adama. He is capable of making tough choices but he is not without compassion. He cares and he tries to do the right thing.
Laura Roslin, on the other hand, is bugging the hell out of me. She seems nice enough on the surface but she has quite a few dirty secrets by now and I feel the reason for their being secrets is that she doesn't have the guts to stand by what she's doing. And if I hear her decide to throw Cylons out of the airlock without thinking about it for even a second or taking a closer look at the situation one more time I'm tempted to throw her out of the next airlock.
I still don't know what to make of Gaius. Most of the time, genius or not, I think he's a egocentric moron. And then suddenly he has his moments that leave me in awe. The first thing that comes to mind here is the way he treats Pegasus' Number Six. How much it gets to him and how he does everything in his power to help her. &hearts
Caprica's Six and Sharon still make me feel that BSG's Cylons have so much in common with SPN's angels. I don't know where they're going to turn next but at the moment I can so clearly see Castiel in them. In the way they seem to care about humanity but are still a little torn and afraid to really step up.
I have seen Leoben in what, two episodes? But he really intrigues me. Despite the little screentime he's had he's already one of the most interesting characters for me.

I will continue with season 3 as soon as I can get my hands on it. After all, I'm still waiting for Romo Lampkin. I want some Mark.

I think some people get it while others don't, and that's perfectly alright. I was kinda late to get into BSG myself (started getting caught up before S3 premiered in fact) but once I did I immediately knew that this was perhaps the best science fiction series ever created. If anything, I think the majority of it has to do with the gut-wrenching material they present that not many shows do in such a wonderful manner. There's all sorts of questions about humanity, about morality and choices, especially during times of war, about soldiers, and there's no simply answer to any situation. It's dark, gritty and depressing, but it has hope and it's such a huge allegory for our times right now and I think that's what makes it so great. At least, in my opinion.

Never mind the mythology intertwined with all the storylines of these characters and what they're going through.

I feel that I can sum Kara up by saying that she is pretty much a female version of Dean.

Yeah, pretty much my thoughts exactly.

And if I hear her decide to throw Cylons out of the airlock without thinking about it for even a second or taking a closer look at the situation one more time I'm tempted to throw her out of the next airlock.

Well, there's definitely some reason behind her for doing it, even though I agree with what you're saying about her wanting to throw anyone out the airlock. Roslin does seem to hold some kind of secret agenda but as you can see, and I really disliked her on some occasions because of the choices she made (ex. her taking Sharon and Helo's child away and faking her death only based on her assumed fear, which is pretty damn malicious to do imo and for anyone who has lost a child would be in the right to hate Roslin for that alone). But I really can't dislike Roslin as a whole.

I think that's how most people felt about him and, without revealing anything, love him or hate him, it's been stated that Gaius Baltar is perhaps the most human character on the entire show. And I absolutely agree, which is why I absolutely adore him and the journey he undergoes, which you'll see more of as you continue on.

Caprica's Six and Sharon still make me feel that BSG's Cylons have so much in common with SPN's angels. I don't know where they're going to turn next but at the moment I can so clearly see Castiel in them. In the way they seem to care about humanity but are still a little torn and afraid to really step up.

Cylons and the SPN!angels, like two peas in a pod, amirite? Seriously, the parallels are so uncanny. I can definitely see a crossover where Sharon, Caprica-Six and Castiel all kind of band together to form their own little support group of loving humans or something. ;p

I think what makes BSG so intriguing to me, personally, is how all the characters are so incredibly flawed, how their own morality codes, and all go through so many experiences that change their either for better or for worse. There's definitely consequences with their actions, there's changes in their behaviors and attitudes and seeing these gradual things over the seasons, the growths of these characters, is something I appreciate about this show as a whole.

I can see all that. The problem is that I don't feel it and I need an emotional connection to a show to do more than watch it and just move on. I have the theory that BSG is taking itself slightly too serious for me to take it serious if that makes any sense.
But like you say, as with most shows, some people get it and some don't.

When she took Sharon's and Helo's child leaving the parents to believe their little girl is dead, that was the defining moment for me, when I went from being unsure about Roslin to disliking her. Even if you go with "Cylons are just machines" Helo is still human (as least as far as I know. ;)) and what she did was just downright cruel imo.

I think that's how most people felt about him and, without revealing anything, love him or hate him, it's been stated that Gaius Baltar is perhaps the most human character on the entire show.
He is definitely one of the most interesting characters to watch and one of the main reason I really want to continue watching.
