Prisoners

I went to see Prisoners yesterday, and while I do think it had the potential to be a truly great movie and almost succeeded, it had me leave the cinema disappointed and even angry. I decided to sleep on it, and I still feel the same today

The good, the bad and some spoilers but I'm keeping it vague )

I don't know if you guys ever heard about Kings. It's a show loosely based on the "Book of Samuel" and it's a fantastic show that was cancelled way too soon.
But at least we have those 13 episodes of season 1, right?

Or not )
gwaevalarin: (Erica)
Such a busy time of year when it comes to new shows.

Atlantis
It's pretty much as trashy as I expected. I just can't decide yet if charmingly or annoyingly so. The 'great destiny' part has me extremely cautious. Not sure I'm willing to deal with that again.
Unless I find myself bored on my weekends, I think I'll wait and maybe catch up sometime.
Oh, but if you're into gratuitous shirtless scenes you might want to check it out. It's pretty good with that.

Witches of East End
It could just as well be called Charmed reloaded. Even the house looks so similar that I'm not entirely certain it isn't the same one. It's not the exact same story. There are only two sisters, and their mother is still around. But it is the same idea of these sisters not knowing they are witches because their mother put them under a spell so they could grow up normal until, when they are in their 20s, something happens and they find out and have to start battling evil and curses while trying to continue with their normal lives. And as much as I loved Charmed back in the days, I don't think I need another version if it.

The Tomorrow People
You know the story: Troubled but kind teenager figures out that all his problems stem from him growing up not knowing he has special powers. He is found by a group of people just like him, who live underground and are each other's substitute family. There is an organisation hunting them while claiming they only act in everyone's best interest. Troubled teenager turns out to be some sort of chosen one and there are "unexpected" blood relations making everything even more complicated. So far it all looks very cliché, but there is always potential that this show may take some interesting turns once it has found its footing. So if I find the time, I might stick around to see where it goes.

Once Upon A Time In Wonderland
It's very obvious very quickly that this is a OUAT spin-off. It's actually even sillier than the original show. But it's fun silly, and Wonderland is such a great place to play in.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D
It's exactly what you expect. I'll need a few more episodes to really get to know and properly warm up to the characters, but I'm very happy to have this show on my list for this season, and I hope it gets to stick around and fully explore its potential. Because it does have a lot of potential, and with the name Joss Whedon attached to it, I have little doubt that this potential will be put to work sooner rather than later. Welcome to Level 7.

Hostages
Promising start. It's not exactly my type of show but the pilot has convinced me to give it at least a few more episodes. I think the most interesting aspect is that you don't quite know if the hostage-takers are bad guys or somewhat good guys with questionable methods. Right now I'm leaning towards the latter but that's something only time can tell when, hopefully, things start to get more clear.

The Blacklist
Another one that's pretty good but I'm not sure it'll make the cut because there are just too many other shows I like more. My main problem is that I find Reddington rather annoying and see no chemistry between him and Elisabeth. Unfortunately that's one of the main keystones this show tries to build on. Then again, I do like Elisabeth. Not sure if that's enough.

Lucky 7
I don't know. It's and interesting idea, it's kinda sweet, and the characters feel real but it's just not for me I guess. I had a few "d'awww" moments but I can't really see myself getting invested in the show or the characters.

Masters of Sex
It's an interesting topic and I really like how sex positive the show is, but I don't think I want to watch an entire (or even several) season(s) about it. Personally, I feel it would work better as a movie.

First pilot of the season.

It's not perfect and it doesn't re-imagine television, but it is scary, it's gory, it's funny; it has a strong female lead; it has a fish out of the water male lead who brings both comedy - without being treated as a joke - and a unique perspective; it has magic and ancient evil; it has a "Book of Revelation" based mythology and it is definitely going on my to watch list.

I'm quietly amused at Tumblr talking about all the things we know after the Pretty Little Liars finale, because if you just take a second to think about it, we do not know a thing.

Gishwhes is once again over, so here is what I spent my last week doing:

Pyramids, picture books, haikus und food flags )
gwaevalarin: (Cas)
I was just out doing my favourite item for this years Gishwhes with some help from my Mom, who I can totally recommend as a photographer, by the way (and as a Mom, but she's mine and you can't have her. ;)).

While we were preparing the item, a mother walked by with her maybe 2-year-old child, and the poor girls was struggling and whimpering. She wasn't having a crying fit or anything. She just seemed scared and like she wanted to be anywhere but here.

The mother was dragging her along and downright yelling at her to get up and stop it and: "When Mommy says we go to the playground, then we go to the playground!"

...

What the actual fuck? What's wrong with some people?

Sorry, I have hardly been around lately. I'm mostly on Tumblr these days. But I'll share my Gishwhes items here when the hunt is over, and I hope to write more tv show reaction posts again.

How are you all?
gwaevalarin: (Crowley)
Because [livejournal.com profile] rinnus complained that I'm not doing these posts anymore, and because there are a few new very promising shows this summer.

Twisted
An ABCFamily show that has quite a bit of a Pretty Little Liars feel to it. The basic story is, that 16-year-old Danny returns to his home town after he has spend five years in juvenile prison for killing his aunt. No one knows why he did it, and he is not telling anyone. so when there is another murder in town he very quickly becomes the prime suspect.

Under The Dome
A small town suddenly finds itself trapped under an invisible force field. No one can get out, no one can get in, and some people seem to have a few secrets. Whether those secrets have anything to do with this mysterious event remains to be seen.
The show's concept kinda feels like something we have all seen before but that's no necessarily a bad thing. After all, that doesn't mean that you have any idea what's really going on in this version of the story.
It also has Colin Ford and, guys, he's all grown up.

Siberia
Siberia is about a reality tv show gone wrong; mostly because they picked the wrong place, a place were strange things are happening. It was supposed to be a game, until the strange noises started and people ended up dead.
Again, not exactly a new concept, but entertaining. If you've seen The River: It reminds me a lot of that show.
