Welcome to the podium (almost) impossible to beat of the season (so far) impossible to beat. *g*

This next amazing formula 1 weekend started on Saturday with a pole I, to be honest, didn't expect. Rubens seemed to be able to get the new updates to work better and the Red Bull looked really strong. But that one lap, when it mattered, Jenson pushed the car to the limits and drove it on pole. Must have been one hell of a lap.

The race itself didn't start perfectly for Jenson but great for the team with Rubens taking the lead and Jenson second. Vettel might have been a thread had he managed to overtake Massa but he didn't. So it was down to the two BrawnGPs to fight each other for the win. Without team order, and having read the press conference I seriously doubt Rubens said anything like that. Anyway, they switched Jenson's strategie to a two stop that should have been slower but turned out to be the key to winning the race. And yes, I did cheer a little when the team told Rubens that he had to push harder because he was just falling behind Jenson. I wouldn't begrudge Rubens a victory - and if things continue like that I'm sure we will see him win this season - but I just prefer to see Jenson on top of the podium.
And Mark? Mark looked like he'd be inconspicuously racing for some points and, after his last pit stop, he suddenly came out third. :)

Also, seeing Jenson and Rubens right after the race chatting and laughing together... I feel there's such an amazing atmosphere in that team. &hearts

Today I got granted one of the things I wished for this season: Jenson and Mark on the podium together. I would have prefered the first three exactly the other way round or for Mark to win the first race for RBR but I can live with this result as well. ;)

results )

Seems like the BrawnGP had major problems with their tyres today so they didn't stand a chance against the Red Bull. But that's probably down to the weather conditions and Jenson still finished on the podium so I'm really content with how the race went and how the season continues to progress. Three races, three podium finishes, two victories. I still feel like I'm dreaming.

I'm a little sad that the race didn't end with Mark's first win but he still got his best result so far and he seemed very happy about it. And Vettel just really deserved that victory. He drove a fantastic race.

Really bad day for Sutil. So close but you still have to finish the race to get points.

My favourite part of the race has to be the fight between Mark and Jenson. First Jenson made a mistake and Mark overtook him, the Mark made a mistake and Jenson took back his second position and then Mark overtook him again because he just had the better car today. That was so much fun to watch. :)

And one more thing I love about Jenson is how he just went over to Vettel after the race to congratulate him and tell him that he did great. And you can see that he means it. &hearts
gwaevalarin: (Honda)
That was the shortest race I've ever seen. It just was a bad idea to start the Malaysia race this late. I was surprised they got away with it for the qualifying yesterday. They couldn't be that lucky twice.
But Jenson got and deserved his second win in the second race of the season. So I sure as hell won't complain. Even if the red flag means that he'll only get 5 points instead of 10.

Jenson had a pretty bad start but fought his way back from 4th to 3rd very quickly. And honestly, I even thought that him not leading from the start would make things a little more interesting. Last week I was pretty nervous during the race because that victory felt so important because we didn't know yet what Brawn GP really were capable of. But this week I was more relaxed. I knew that Jenson still had a very good chance of winning and otherwise he'd manage a podium finish. And he did win again. Under rather odd circumstances but it's still a victory. His face, when he was told that the race wouldn't be restarted and he had won, was great. *g* I still have no idea, though, how he managed to stay in front of Glock after changing from intermdiates back to wet tyres. He must have had a hell of a lap there which just proves that he's still amazing in the rain.

It was also great to see quite a bit of Mark for a change. Firstly, because he was constantly running through the rain after the race had been stopped to talk to every single one of the other drivers. And secondly and more importantly, because he finished 6th. I'd like to see some more top 8 and, preferably, top 3 finishes by him in the future. Jenson and Mark on the podium together at least once this year, that'd be great.

And welcome to formula 1 Brawn GP

(Though I did like the name "Brackley F1" better. ;-))

It starts here...

YAY!
gwaevalarin: (Honda)

I seems like a team in Brackley is willing to fight together with Nick Fry, Ross Brawn and Jenson. If there's any possibility to achieve it they'll be driving next season. They won't give up.
Did I mention that I really like this team? &hearts
And fortunately it will still be the same team if they make it. They just won't be called Honda any more.

Must be a hard decision for Jenson now. He could probably get a contract with Toro Rosso. They are looking for a experienced driver after all. That'd be a safe seat but with a rather small team and no real chances for wins or the world championship.

Or he could take the risk and stay with "Honda". Succeed or lose with them.

To be honest I think I'd prefer the later even though the uncertainty will probably kill me. I just feel like it's his team. It's where he belongs. And if they make it through this together, they might finally beat the Bad World and get rewarded for all the hard work.

I'll just hope for the best once more and keep my fingers crossed. It's not over yet.

With all the excitement about the last race slowly dying down I think it's time for a proper goodbye:

Bye, David. It's sad to see one of the last real characters leave f1. I wish your last race'd have lasted a little longer.
Luckily you won't really be gone. See you around as the BBC's new formula 1 expert. :)

I'm so glad this nightmare of a formula 1 season is finally over. And it ended with the clostest and most dramatic fight for the championship I've ever seen. The championship was literally decided in the last corner. And even though it ended badly from my point of view I'm glad I watched it. I wouldn't really have wanted to miss that excitement.

I had almost given up hope when they predicted another rain shower. That was when I saw another chance. Everyone came in to change tyres, just the Toyotas stayed out. And suddenly Hamilton was only 5th instead of 4th. Then Vettel - who once again did an amzing job - started closing in and overtook Hamilton. So in the last lap it looked like luck was on the side I hoped it'd be once again. I was just hoping and begging that Vettel and especially Timo on his dry tyres would be able to bring their positions home. Massa crossed the line and won. Räikkönen and Alonso - who I've dubbed the third Ferrari driver during the last weeks - followed him. Brasil was already celebrating and then in the very last corner I saw Hamilton pass a Toyota. For a split second I hoped that it was Trulli but of course it was Timo, simply not standing a chance with his tyres. He fought with everything he had and of course I won't blame Timo for anything, but it is sad that he of all people up there in front, was the one to cost Massa his championship.
I have to apologies to poor Elanor. I startled her when I cried out the moment I saw that overtaking manoeuvre.
So I guess I have to say goodbye to the chance of Jenson becoming the next British champion now. But hey, the moment I see Jenson become world champion I won't care about that any more, right? I still hate the thought now, though. *sighs*

I'm not a Massa fan at all. I don't like him that much, I don't like Ferrari and the only reason I wanted him to win the championship was that Hamilton wouldn't win it but to be honest: When I saw him up there on the podium, fighting tears... I almost felt like cuddling the poor guy. But that won't happen again, I'm sure.

So, well, at least it is over. Finally. I'm not going to say I can't get worse next year because if I do the Bad World's just going find a way to prove me wrong. But I'll just keep my optimism and hope that things will finally get better again.

Bye for now, F1. And yes, of course I will still miss you.

Edit: Would people stop blaming Timo already. What was he supposed to do? Had he changed tyres he would never have passed Hamilton in the first place. So he neither made a bad choice in staying out on dry tyres nor did he just let Hamilton pass. It is not his fault, damnit!

Our local newpaper had an article on Lewis Hamilton a few days ago that comes pretty close on my view on him. It's in German but I'll translate it upon request if anyone is interested.

I'm truely impressed by what Sebastian Vettel and Toro Rosso achieved today. And yesterday for that matter. That was just amazing. I'm happy for them. They really deserved this victory. Congratulations! :)
It's so great to see a team and driver to really celebrate a win because it is something special for them. Seeing them celebrate kind of made my day even though of course it's still nothing compared to seeing one of your favourite drivers win or on the podium. Something that doesn't happen enough lately. But at least I saw quite a bit of Jenson, Mark and Timo* today. They had some fights that were a lot of fun to watch.

* Yeah, about that. I think I have a confession to make.
I liked Timo when he first drove in formula 1 - which is a new one, me actually liking a German driver - and I was happy for him when I heard that he'd be back this season. But more in a "Oh, that's nice for him" and not giving it a second thought kind of way.
But somehow during the course of the season he slowly but surely managed to win me over and make his way into the circle of my favourite drivers. Or rather colourfully, thinking about the moment I realised I was lost - as far as I was still able to realise anything while lying on the floor laughing.
Unfortunately that was right before the German GP so I started my life as a Tomo fangirl with a shock. But it was also just in time for his first podium finish two weeks later.
I still wish Jenson had been that quick in getting my attention. Then I'd have quite some more memories to get me through yet another frustrating season. *sighs* [/End of confession]

Canada 2008

What a race! First of all: Congratulation to Kubica and BMW. I'm afraid I tend to underrate Kubica but he really does an amazing job. After all, he won this race and he's leading the championship now.

Then of course there was the accident at the end of the pit-lane where Hamilton just drove into Räikkönen's car. It seems like F1 drivers have a slight problem with red lights. Either they just drive through them or they get far too late, why the cars in front of them are stopping.

There where a lot of amazing overtaking maneuvres. Especially the one when Massa got passed Kovalainen and Barichello. That's exactly why the Canadian GP is so much fun: You actually see the drivers fight on the track.

The GP would have been a lot more fun though if Jenson and Mark had had a better result. There were only 12 drivers finishing the race. At least they both were amongst them. But it means that only 4 drivers finishing the race didn't get points. And unfortunately again they both were amongst them. *sighs*
Of course Jenson had these problems with his gearbox yesterday so he only qualified 19th. That made it really difficult for him to get anywhere. In all the chaos of the SC phase he even gained quite a few places. But being on a two stop strategie while most of the others only did one stops he couldn't hold his position. It's really sad to see him that far back while Rubens even lead the race for a while. But at least that means that Honda really is improving.
I'm a little disappointed in Mark. He started 10th so I at least expected some points. Yes, I guess I am a little spoiled after the really good results he's had lately.

gwaevalarin: (Honda)
And I thought Monaco would be boring. Well, when there's rain a GP hardly ever is. And since once in a while a chaotic race is fun, as long as it doesn't happen too often, I enjoyed it. I also think it was my first race where the 2-hour-rule took effect.

A great result for Mark. I had this faint hope that it might be enough for podium but I won't complain. 4th is great. So far he's having a very good season. I hope it'll last.

No points for Jenson but I can't say I'm too disappointed, simply because it looked like Jenson had a lot of fun today. Well, after the bad start and a new front wing. He probably wanted a little too much when he tried to overtake Heidfeld. But he had to try. How often can you try to overtake someone in Monaco? Without that collison points'd have probably been possible. So okay, maybe I'm a little disappointed. After that, Rosberg took him by surprise once while he let Massa overlap him. And once Kovalainen hit him so he spun but luckily could drive on. The rest of the time whenever I saw him he was fighting somewhere, chasing someone and just driving a great race.

results )

I feel very sorry for Sutil. I usually don't even realise where he is but he just did an amazing job today and so would have deserved finishing in the points. And then Räikkönen screwed up Sutil's race because he seemingly couldn't wait to pass him. It's too bad really. Poor guy. He looked very, very disappointed.

When Piquet went out on slicks - yeah, I know, they're not really slicks - I so knew he'd end somewhere in a wall. Alonso could hardly control the car. How was Piquet with so little experience supposed to handle the situation?

Super Aguri withdraw from 2008 championship

Following weeks of speculation concerning the future of the team, Super Aguri announced Tuesday that they are to withdraw from the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship with immediate effect. [...]

Source: formula1.com

First Juancho, then Jacques and now Ant? All of them leaving or being forced to leave formula 1 without even one last race to say goodbye. That's just not fair. Why does it always have to be my favourite drivers?

Of course with Super Aguri I knew that something like that could happen for a while now. But I still hoped the team could be saved. After all things looked quite good with the Weigl group. The worst thing about it is that I have the feeling that Honda wasn't really willing to help them any more in the end. That they could have done a little more and then Super Aguri might still be racing. But of course I don't know what the exact circumstances where.

Bottom line is: Ant is gone from formula 1 and I don't know if he'll ever be back. I really hope he will be but I don't know if I believe in it.

Please, Jense, promise me you won't be leaving like that. Ever. *clings to him*
gwaevalarin: (Honda)
The most important thing first: I'm so glad Kovalainen is okay considering. It's such a terrible feeling when you're waiting and waiting for news on the driver not knowing how he is. But then finally we got the thumbs up from Kovalainen that always at least tells you that he's conscious and knows whats going on. I hope he's perfectly fit and ready to race again in two weeks.

That being said: Wohooo! Championship points for Jenson and Mark! A result like that is really all I'm asking for at the moment. I didn't even expect that much today. I don't care what everything says about Honda's new additional wing - I don't think it's that ugly - it seems to work and that's what counts. Even though I have to admit that luck probably played its part for Jenson today. But who cares. He finished, others didn't. He's 6th and gets the points. *g*

Mark's season is going pretty well so far. Finally after years of bad luck he might finally be able to show what he's capable of again.

Ant unfortunately was invincible again. This time almost literally. Suddenly his name didn't even show up any more until they finally gave us the information that he had retired from the race. Well, at least he was able to start the race in the first place. With Super Aguri's financial problems I'm not taking that for granted.

Okay, what happened? Jenson had a good start and then suddenly he was gone. And of course RTL being RTL recognised it about 3 laps later, said that they didn't know what had happened and moved on.
Which meant I once again had to wait and bite my nails until I finally saw him still on track. Unfortunately his race still didn't last very long and he kicked himself out colliding with Coulthard. What's going on with Jenson lately? Last race the mistake in the last lap - that fortunately didn't cost him anything - and now that collision. He and Coulthard, they both can act more professional than that but I have to admit that it seemed to be mainly Jenson's fault. *sighs*
I hope we won't see anything like that again because Jenson usually doesn't make mistakes like that and he was clearly going for points today.

I once more didn't see much of Ant but at least he was on screen a few times. When Hamilton overtook him it looked a little like he mistook it for being overlapped. That's what the McLaren usually do with him, right. ;) But of course I do know that there's not much he can fight a McLaren with.
The really good news: He finished in front of Sato. That's great!

Mark pretty much saved the race. Points again. Yay! This season doesn't look to bad for him so far. It's nice to see him finish his races for a change.

gwaevalarin: (Honda)
What a way to start the season. After not even one lap all three of my favourite drivers were out. For a moment I considered just going back to sleep.
I don't even know what exactly happened to them. I think I saw Ant hitting Nakajima. Mark was suddenly standing in the box the mechanics working on the car. And Jenson's car was very unstable seemingly after a collision. For a while I hoped that it was just a flat tyre and he'd be able to go on until after what seemed like forever they showed him again having retired. :(

The good news: Judging from Barichello's race the new Honda seems to be okay. Way better than I had expected after the winter. If they can keep that level I'm optimistic than Jenson can get points on a regular basis. If they can improve we might even be able to look forward to seeing Jenson back on the podium.

All in all an interesting race. It's great to see how close the teams are. I very much enjoyed the fight between Alonso and Kovalainen in the second but last lap. I just hope we'll see less accidents in the future and more drivers finishing the race. Timo's accident looked bad. I'm glad he's okay but I can't believe the track is in a condition like that.

That was a lot of fun - especially the last race. I never get tired of watching Hungary 2006 *g* - and now it's only two more weeks until the real season starts again. And hopefully it'll bring us a lot of interesting, exciting and fair races and a new champion who's name isn't Hamilton. "New" means not you again either, Alonso.

There is a German band named "Jenson"

When I heard that on Rock Antenne (a Bavarian radio station) yesterday it made me giggle but I didn't think the name had anything to do with one of the Jenso/ens I know.
Turns out it does. My mother just came to my room to tell me that she heard an interview with them and they actually named themselves after Jenson Button.
Doesn't make me like their music. One, it's German and two, not exactly my style. But it's still kinda cool that someone named their band after my formula 1 favourite. :)

The reason they chose his name is a little weird though. I didn't pay attention to the exact phrasing but it sounded like some bad guy formula 1 driver cliché and nothing at all like the optimistic nice guy with the most blinding smile ever I know Jense to be. But, hey, whatever. *shrugs*

I wonder if Jenson know about them.

The long evil winter hiatus lies ahead of us. Five longs months of waiting and hoping for a better season next year. Depressing thought, isn't it? So I thought about what to do about it. Well, I have a few races from 2003 to present lying around here on VHS and DVD. Races I liked, races I experienced live, races my favourite drivers won... Some of the best memories of those seasons. A little help to get me through the winter. But since simply watching them is somewhat boring and uninspired I present to you:

The Hiatus Championship 2007/08 )

Don't worry. I'm not gonna spam your flist with this all winter. I'll update this entry throughout the season and maybe post another one to announce the hiatus champion.
