I'm not really sure what to think about that episode yet. Maybe I'll learn to like it better after I've seen it a few times but right now it left me with a kinda weird feeling. I'm not sure I like where this is going but I'll just wait and see.

"Hell's Bells" is a kick ass way to start an episode.

We're in Oak Park, Illinois where some average guy, who looks like he works in a copy shop, brings out the garbage and wishes he had his neighbours shiny new car. Suddenly the dustbins start to rattle and the street lights start to flicker. Seems like there's a demon close by.
Erm, sorry, I was wrong: Seems like there's a whole armee of demons close by that just escaped from hell. And one of them thinks that some random guy who just stands there and stares is the perfect person to possess while the others fly on to look for an acceptable host.

Oh, shiny new metallike writing with a Devil's Trap right at the beginning.

A week after the devil's gate opened:
Sam is sitting in the Impala with a flashlight and reads his way through a big old book about Dr.Faustus and Crossroad Demons looking for a way to save his brother, while Dean.. where is Dean?
He's in the boys' motel room and he's got company. And Sam cleared the room because Dean deserves some fun and distraction. Sam shakes his head like: "Yeah, that's my big brother. He's weird at times but he just saved my life and I love him." And, hey, at that time I still thought Dean's behaviour was kinda funny.
Bobby calls and tells Sam that he won't find a way to save Dean in a book. But we're talking about Sam here and research and lots of reading just is how he finds a solution to every problem. Bobby also tells Sam that he found something so they've got work to do.

Sam can't seriously tell me that he had no idea what he was walking into when he walked into that motel room. Well, okay, maybe he wasn't quite expecting to walk into something like this (whatever "this" was).
A short time later they're in the car. Dean's all chipper, I'm starting to worry and Sam's slightly grossed out.

"Let me see your knife."
"What for?"
"So I can gouge my eyes out?"

But Sam also feels guilty like hell. Dean sold his soul for him so right now Sam's willing to let him have anything he wants and to let him get away with anything. But he's quiet, seems kinda beaten. I can hardly understand some of the things he says. Poor Sammy. And Dean doesn't notice, doesn't want to notice. I guess Dean decided hat for the next year life is great. Period.
We learn that the demonic cloud appeared over 17 cities but so far things have been worryingly quiet.
The boys meet Bobby "just outside Lincoln, Nebraska" ignoring the small "no trespassing" sign. And if cicadas can't be a good sign than that aweful smell in the house is even worse. Not to mention the dead family sitting in the living room with thet tv on.
There's no sulfur but someone or something is outside on the porch. And that someone knocks Dean down before they greet their old friend Bobby. I like the upside down shot of Bobby from Dean's POV.

Meet Issac and Tamara (with her British accent. Squeee!)
Dean's hand coming up and this "Hello? Bleeding here?" is where Dean starts to annoy me. I'm fine with overly chipper and enjoying the day. But silly is just wrong. Gah!
Isaac and Tamara are a couple of hunters, married for 8 years, who are not willing to talk about what got them started. And I can't say I care.
Dean flirts again, like he does with almost every single female character in that episode. On the phone this time but at least he gets some news as well. Turns out the family just outside Lincoln starved to death. That's odd.

Isaac is not willing to work with our boys. Kinda reminds me of Gordon.

"No offence, but we're not teaming with the damn fools who let the devil's gate get opened in the first place."

Like you were there to stop that from happening. If I remember correctly, YED and Jake opened the gate. The boys, Bobby and Ellen - where is Ellen anway? - closed it again before even more demons got out. Hunters... *shakes head* Naturally Dean get's pretty pissed.

"No offence?"
"Isaac, like you've never made a mistake."
"Yeah, yeah. Locked my keys in the car. Turned my laundry pink. Never brought on the end of the world, though."
"All right that's enough."
"Guys, this isn't helping. Dean."

Sam, the voice of reason. They have enough problems, they don't need to fight each other as well. I can't even tell you how much Sam rocks in this episode and keeps everything from falling apart. And all that while he's busy enough keeping himself from falling apart.
And the last thing he needs right now is more guilt. Thank you very much, Isaac.

Oh, mysterious blonde girl outside the house. Hi, Ruby.

Random posessed guy from the teaser walks into some store and simon-says a girl into loving some shoes someone else just buys the last pair of. Mind control? Andy would help a lot right now. *misses him* Bonus points for the shoes being green. Aside from that: Erm, no. They are not pretty.
Our mind controlled girls asks for the shoes (more or less) nicely twice before she smashes the new owner's head against a car and kills her. I guess she really wanted those shoes.

When Sam enters the store, Dean's - take a guess - flirting.

"Dean, what are you doing?"
"I'm comforting the grieved. What are you doing?"
"Working. Dead body, possible demon attack, that kind of stuff."
"Sam, I'm sorry. You know I don't have much time left. Gotta make every second count."
"Yeah, right. All right. Sorry."
"Apology accepted."

Not. Funny. Dean. Can't you see how much you hurt your brother? But maybe that's at least part of the plan. Annoying him? Pushing him away? It just won't work. He'll be hurt but he will stay, whatever you do. He's your brother, remember?

Bobby, is that you? I hardly recognised him at first.

Bobby doesn't think the girl was possessed but he spilled a glass of holy water on her to be sure. Hehe, that's just like him.
There's not much they can work with except the surveillance camera Dean found.

"See? I'm working."

Luckily random possessed guy didn't really act inconspiciously. The boys split up and Ruby follows Sam and then more or less vanishes when he turns around. What is she up to? What does she know?

Bobby and Dean wait in front of a bar for RPG to show up when there's bang on the door. Hi, Sam, want to join the wait?

Sam starts paying Dean back his behaviour. And then tells them that RPG's name is Walter Rosen and he disappeared a week ago. We all know what else happened a week ago. Walter turns up but when Dean wants to follow Bobby holds him back. And Dean listens good little soldier he's always been. Bobby's in lead and when he says wait they wait.
But obviously Isaac and Tamara think that going in is a good idea. As long as they're not working together there's definately too many hunters on this case. It turns out Walter isn't the only one possessed in that bar. A demom roadhouse!
Isn't Tamara supposed to be a hunter as well? Then why is she standing there clinging to her husband. Where's their weapons? A small bottle of holy water can't seriously be all they took with them. How the hell did you guys survive so far?
One of the demons mind controls Isaac into drinking ... what is it? Well, it's toxic or acidic and Tamara just stands by and screams. She doesn't even try to fight.
Our boys smash the door with Bobby's car (for a split second I thought it was the Impala) just in time to save Tamara. And they have a lot more holy water with them.
Haha, the devil's trap in the trunk is genius.

Back in the house: Tamara wants to go back to get Isaac. Who's dead. There's not really any doubt. Sam wants to hold her back and Dean want to go with her since he's "dead already". Dean, you'll need to be alive in that year if you want to enjoy it.

"How are you gonna kill them? You can't shoot them, can't stab them. They're not just gonna wait in line to get exorcised."

Sam took over the family business and he's a lot tougher than he's ever been. I like that new side on him. I love Sam in that episode (even more than usual). And Jared owns each and every one of his scenes.

And Bobby rocks. And he found out what they're up against: The Seven Deadly Sins live and in the flesh... well, not their flesh but anyway.
The Seven Deadly Sins...
That sounds more like "Charmed" than "Supernatural".

"What's in the box?"
...
"Brad Pitt? Seven? No?"

Not really the time for jokes, Dean, but *lol*

Bensfield's "Classification of Demons"? Where can I get that?
So, the family was touched by Slaught, the shoe girl by Envy and Isaac by Gluttony.
Yay once more for Bobby for taking control here.

They have a little chat with Envy who basically tells them that he and his friends are having the time of their "lives". And he tells them some of their sins. Gluttony and Lust for Dean, Wrath for Tamara. Yeah, well, those are pretty obvious. I'd have loved to hear what he had to say about Sam.

Tamara performs an exorcism on Envy. So once you've got them it's pretty easy to get rid of them. Almost a little too easy. But the catch is: You have to get them first. And there's still six of them out there. And they're on their way. Too late to rescue their friend but right in time to get revenge.

Dean offers to stay back and buy a little time for the rest. Dean, enough already. We got it: You'll be dead in a year anyway. But that still makes a 51 week difference. You don't seriouslly think Sam'll just leave you behind, do you? What happend to everything you talked about in the last scene of AHBL II? That was only a week ago.

"There's six of them, guys. We're outmaned, we're outgunned. We'll be dead by dawn."
"Maybe, but there's no place to run where they won't find us."
"Look, if we're going down, we're going down together, alright?"

Once more: Yeah, Sam!
The boys and Tamara get ready for the fight. Salt, holy water, shotguns. It's four against six. That doesn't sound totally hopeless.

First "Isaac" turns up. It's obvious that it's just his posessed corpse but it's cruel. Tamara isn't the best hunter in town but I really feel for her. It's amazing how Bobby comforts her but when "Isaac" mentiones their daughter who seemingly got killed by something supernatural she rushes outside, destroys the salt line which is bad, and stabs the demon with her demon killing wooden stake. The rest of the Sin gang enter the house and attacks.
Sloth for Bobby.

"Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."

Hehe. 4 to go.

Lust for Dean.

"Baby, I'm whatever you want me to be."
"Yeah, alright, just stay back."
"Or what?"
"Good point."

Dean kisses her and then pretty much drowns her in holy water. 3 to go.
All of them for Sam: Pride followed by Gluttony and Greed. That's not exactly fair. And there goes Sam's Devil's Trap. I hope you have a backup plan, Sammy.

"The root of all sins. And you are Sam Winchester. That's right, I've heard of you. We've all heard of you. Prodigy. The boy king. Looking at you now I got to tell you I don't believe the hype. You think I'm gonna bow to a cutrid piss poor human like you?"

Erm, I don't really think that was Sam's plan. But there's obviously no other plan either. Come on, Sam, the Devil's Trap was seriously all you had?

Ruby turns up and kills all three remaining Sins with a kick ass magic knife. Wasn't there something about the girls not being Mary Sues? Cause this right there is the definition of a Mary Sue. I hope that impression changes once we see more of Ruby.
Did Greed just say "You!" like she knew Ruby?

The next morning they salt and burn the bodies. Lust's and Sloth's hosts made it. "Lifetime of therapie bills ahead, but still." At least two of them. The rest, including Isaac are the war's first casualties.

Sam askes about Ruby's knife but Bobby has no idea what it is and what it's made off. It would really come in handy if the boys had one of those.

"I'm just gonna ask it again: Who was that mass chick?"

Dean... *rolls eyes*

"Actually the more troubling question would be: How come a girl can fight better than you?"
"Three demons, Dean. At once."
"Hey, whatever it takes to get you through the night, pal."

That sounds more like my boys. *g*

"If you want a troubling question I got one for ya."
"What's that?"
"If we let out the Seven Deadly Sins, what else did we let out?"
"You're right, that is troubling."

Indeed, it is.
They say goodbye to Tamara and Bobby and things aren't really looking hopeful.

And then there's the heartbreaking last scene:
Sam wants to go to Luisiana to see some Hodoo priest who might help them save Dean.

"Nah."
"Nah? What does that mean: Nah?"

Dean doesn't want to go. Doesn't even want to try and of course Sam can't understand why. I think it's time to tell the truth, Dean. Because Sam has reached his limits. He has to deal with too much right now.

"You know I've had it. I've been bending over backwards trying to be nice to you and I don't care any more."
"That didn't last long."
"Well, you know what? I've been busting my ass trying to keep you alive, Dean, and you act like you couldn't care less. What you got some kind of death wish or something?"

And finally Dean spills the beans.

"We trap the crossroad demon, trick it, try to welsh our way out of the deal in any way, you die. Okay? You die. Those are the terms, there's no way out of it. You try to find a way, so help me god, I'm gonna stop you."

As far as I remember Dean is not allowed to wiggle is way out. No one said anything about Sam getting him out but I guess Dean won't take the chance.
I think it's good Dean told Sam but it's a shock. You can see Sam losing his hope. Until now he thought he could pay Dean back what he did for him, but now...

"How could you make that deal, Dean?"
"Cause I couldn't live with you dead. Couldn't do it."
"So what? Now I live and you die."
"That's the general idea, yeah."
"You're a hypocrit, Dean. How did you feel when Dad sold his soul for you? Cause I was there. I remember. You were twisted and broken. And now you're gonna do the same thing. To me. What you did was selfish."
"Yeah, you're right. It was selfish. But I'm okay with that."
"I'm not."
"Tough. After everything I've done for this family I think I'm entitled. Truth is I'm tired, Sam, and, I don't know, it's like there's a light at the end of the tunnel."
"It's hellfire, Dean."

Ouch. But I love the answer.

Dean, you selfish bastard! Don't you walk away on Sam like that! He feels guilty enough already. Don't you put even more guilt on him! Why don't you just stab a knife through his heart and twist it?
No, I don't really mean that. I'm not really that mad with Dean. It's actually the only scene in the episode I can really see the Dean I know. It's just... look at Sam. My poor, broken boy who's desperatly looking for some hope. *hugs sam tight* You are gonna find a way, whether Dean wants you to or not.

I like this episode a lot better after having watched it for the second time. I guess Kripke just once more got me. Dean annoying the hell out of me just like he annoyed the hell out of Sam... I was completely wrapped up in the episode, taking Sam's side and I was too annoyed to even realize. I hate you, Kripke! &hearts

I really like your character explorations in this review *thumbs up*

And the last thing he needs right now is more guilt.

I think I have absolutely nothing to add to this except for, awesome analysis!

I think I may would have passed Bobby off as a passerby if Dean wouldn't have addressed him when he stood in front of that mirror. Shiny though :)

As far as I remember Dean is not allowed to wiggle is way out. No one said anything about Sam getting him out but I guess Dean won't take the chance.
Looks like he's not going to give the demon any kind of reason to break the deal. But it's Sammy, he'll find a way.

Thank you.

Bobby without his cap is just too unfamilar a sight.

But it's Sammy, he'll find a way.
He will and if it literally kills him. Which I very much hope it won't.

Oh, shiny new metallike writing with a Devil's Trap right at the beginning.
What? Metallicar-like? Oh. Uhm, whoops... *looks for her glasses*

Well, okay, maybe he wasn't quite expecting to walk into something like this (whatever "this" was).
I really wanna know what Sam had seen. I'm just curious and it has nothing to do with seeing some naked Dean. Really, just curious. *coughs*

As for Dean: Somehow I get the feeling that noone can see that this is all just a facade Dean has built up. He has to convince his little brother and Bobby that he's totally okay with the deal he made with the crossroad demon. And he has to convince himself. So he's overacting, too chipper and too happy so that everyone can see that he's really alright with it!

And if he plays it long enough and especially loud enough he himself will start believing it eventually. Which is what he's aiming for, in my opinion.

It's just... look at Sam. My poor, broken boy who's desperatly looking for some hope.
Hate to break it to you, but right now, Dean is suffering much more than Sammy. He just doesn't show it, because he's Dean Winchester. Nothing can affect him and he sure as hell won't talk about his feelings. Period. Although it'd be about damn time!

Who's gonna watch out for little Sammy when Dean's last year is over? Dean will be in hell and Bobby surely won't be around 24/7. Of course, Sam is a big boy, but for Dean he's still "just" his little brother. The one he took care of all the time. How's Sammy gonna survive in this evil world when Dean's not around anymore to protect him? That's something Dean didn't really think of when he had made the deal in AHBL2. But now it's slowly but surely making its way into his mind and Dean just can't handle it.

Our "old" Dean is somewhere underneath that facade. And I know Sammy well enough to know that it'll only be a matter of time until Sam can bring the "old" Dean back. Because you're right:

He'll be hurt but he will stay, whatever you do. He's your brother, remember?

And this?
But maybe that's at least part of the plan. Annoying him? Pushing him away?
This is exactly what Dean's aiming for. Making it "easier" for Sam when Dean has to leave this world.

As for the episode itself: I liked it. It's definitely not one of my favourites, because they should've taken some more time on telling how the sins affect the humans, but it wasn't as bad as "Bugs". At least. *g*

No, he's not. They're both hurt, they're both suffering (and yes, I do see that Dean's just pretending to be happy) and I don't think you can really compare. And even if you could the question who's suffering more is not my point at all. The important question is how they deal with their pain especially towards each other.
