Southern England Day 2 (13/09/2007)

Day 2 - The Sea
On Thursday we took the train to Portsmouth Harbour. I love English Day Return Tickets. They are only a few pence more than the one way ticket.

We spent the rest of the day on the Isle of Wight. We bought a ferry ticket that also encluded an all day bus ticket on the Isle. Which we excessivly used. *smirk*
Unfortuanetly the whole isle is very much geared to tourists.
That's the pier we had to walk from the ferry to Ryde on the isle:
An that's one of the first times Dean crossed our path. Seems like he had decided to retire from hunting and spent his year at the sea selling souvenirs. But he's closing down again now because he misses the life on the road. :p
We took the bus to Sandown - still voluntarily at this point - to visit the Isle of Wight Zoo with it's big cats. &hearts
The monkeys there were very interested and almost seemed to pose for photos. Especially the lemurs. But then again maybe they only hoped for food.

The cats however were rather bored and tired and prefered lying in the sun. By the way: One of the tigers has had a guest appearance in a James Bond movie.
We also spent a little time at the beach of Sandown while waiting for the next bus. It was a sunny and warm day.
In the afternoon we took the bus to Newport and then Alum Bay where "The Needles" are:
You can take a trip down to the beach with this small lift, but we jus arrived there around 4.30pm and the last one back up was at 4.45p.m. so we decided that there wasn't really enough time left and that we'd take the next bus back to Ryde. Unfortunatly the next bus was the X something. What we didn't know was that it took the route alongside about 3/4 of the islands coast. And the one that just loved Sandown. So the trip back took us more than two hours and we drove through Sandown 5 or 6 times. Every time there was a sign pointing to Sandown we took that road. We almost felt like we were staring in a horror movie called somethign like "The course of Sandown - You're never gonna leave." ;)
But in the end we finally arrived in Ryde again and took the ferry back to Portmouth were we watched the most amazingSandown sundown. I like the 3rd picture a lot:
