An old friend comes by

I'm building a shrine for Jared now. What he did in this episode was just... Wow! He really played Meg* not an evil version of Sam. And he played Meg playing Sam. And it was perfect. Twisted and scary and... *is lost for words*
It was also great to see Bobby again. And it was kinda nice to have Meg back as well. I hated her in season one but I had completely forgotten how much fun it is to hate her.
The "Then" and "Now" part is back and Dean's searching for Sam aksing Ellen for help. He's desperate and scared.

Sam's gone and he has no idea what happend. It's killing him. But then Sam calls, Dean asks him where to find him and of course instantly drives there. I wonder how long Ellen waited on the other line before she decided not to "hang on" any longer.
Dean finds "Sam" in a motel room, his hands and his shirt covered in blood. Probably not his own - It's pretty hard to decide if that's good or bad news - and with no memory of the past week.

My first thought was that Sam had been possessed for that week. I wasn't that wrong, was I? What I didn't believe for a second was that Sam really had gone evil. Not that fast and without remembering anything. That just didn't make any sense.
Sam, or what I thought was Sam at that point, is all "What if I killed someone? What if that's how it happens?" But Dean wants to find out what exactly is going on. Because he won't just jump to conclusions. Especially when it's Sam and he's all emo and feeling bad and just not a killer.
Their research leads them to a car and more blood and a knife and cigarettes. It's funny that Sam wipes his fingerprints off the knife while they are otherwise both leaving fingerprints all over the place. They find someone at a gas staion who remembers Sam because he was there the day before drank, stole and hit him with a bottle. Possessed, definately. That doesn't sound like Sam at all, not even an evil version of him. But I was still just thinking about the past week. That demon did a freaking good job in acting like Sam. On the other hand it had access to Sam's thoughts and feelings so it probably wasn't that hard to be convincing. So the guy at the station makes the best of the situation, the best being money here.

*annoyed*
Our boys or rather Dean and the-thing-that-claims-to-be-Sam drive north.
"What's going on with you, Sam? Hm? Cause smoking, throwing bottles at people... I mean, that sounds more like me than you."
What did I miss? When did you smoke and throw bottles at people, Dean?
They stop at an isolated house with a camera in the front yard. They knock though it doesn't look like anyone's home. I mean, the house is as dark as it is outside. There's a smashed window and a disconnected alarm system. Now, that looks like Sam's doing.
Inside they find a dead guy, his throat slit and Sam's sure that he killed him. And Dean just half-heartedly disagrees but still tries to find a way out. Maybe dead!guy was evil or something. Turns out he was a hunter, like them. And the camera in the room finally proves it: It was Sam who killed him. Or at least something that looks like Sam (but no shape shifter. We had enough of them for a while). I may be imagining things but I think I saw Sam having black eyes in the video.
I love that Deans first reaction is to cover all there tracks. I think there's two reasons for that: First of all Dean'd do anything for Sam. He'd kill for him and he'd keep him save even if is brother was a killer or evil or whatever. And second: Maybe Dean also tries to erase what happened. It's like he could undo it by destroying the evidence, pretend it never happened.
Back in the motel room Dean still doesn't stop to think about what happened and what it means for even one moment. He just thinks about a way out, about how to keep Sam save. Because his brother could never kill someone. He just wouldn't. Period. There has to be another explantion
"It wasn't you. Alright? I mean, yeah, it might have been you, but it wasn't you."
He's 100 percent right about that. "Sam" starts to talk about feelings of rage and hate he's been having for weeks but didn't tell Dean to not scare him. An I think that's the point where the demon doesn't really get the brothers because the next part sort of sounds like Sam could say it but still kinda... wrong. Not really like Sam. You know what I mean? Maybe his voice it just a little too firm or something.
"Dean, the yellow eyed demon. You know he has plans for me. And we both know he has turned other children into killers before, too."
"No one can control you, but you."
"It sure doesn't seem like that, Dean. It feels like no matter what I do slowly but surely I'm... I'm just becoming..."
"What?"
"...who I'm meant to be. I mean, you said it once yourself, Dean, I gotta face up to who I am."
"I didn't mean this."
"But it's still true. You know that. Dad knew that, too. That's why he told you if it ever came to this..."
"Shut up, Sam."
"Dean, you promised him. You promised me."
"No. Listen to me. We're gonna figure this out, okay? I mean, there's gotta be a way, right?"
"Yeah, there is."
"Okay"? "Right"? Dean's looking for reassurance here, isn't he?
"I don't want to hurt anyone else. I don't want to hurt you."
"You won't. Whatever this is you can fight it."
Awww! Dean will never lose faith in his little brother. Demon!Sam tries to hand him the gun but Dean won't take it until demon!Sam more or less forces him to take it. And there's another mistake the demon makes in trying to act like Sam. Dean doesn't notice cause, hell, who would in that situation. But during this scene Croatoan came to my mind. The moment when Sam asked Dean for the gun so he could shoot himself. When Sam made Dean promise to shoot him that was in case Sam had lost control over his actions. But in this scene, if that was Sam he'd have control over his actions right then. So if he was convinced that there was no other way out like he was in Croaoan he could've ended it himself. He didn't have to put it on Dean and I'm sure he wouldn't. And Dean'd not be Dean if he shot his brother.
"You know I tried so hard to keep you save."
"I know."
"I can't. I'd rather die."
*melts*
And then the demon finally reveals itself and knocks Dean out.
"No, you'll live. You'll live to regret this."
I don't think so. The regretting, not the living. Of course he'll live. Dean wakes up when the owner of the motel comes in to kick him out. Demon!Sam left hours before and he took Metallicar. He's lucky that Dean's way too worried about his brother right now to worry about her. Dean convinces the owner of the motel to let him use his computer. Really expensive episode for him. Dean (J. Mahogoff) calls... actually I don't know exactly who he calls but he tells them a story about his son Sammy who snuck out to a Justin Timberlake concert and who's a diabetic so Dean has to find him. I can picture the exact look Sam'd give him for that. Dean can track Sam's cellphone to Duluth, Minnesota.
There demon!Sam enters a bar where Jo is working. Why Jo of all people? Arg!
"But that was my father. That's not me."
That's exactly what I said at the end of No exit. Demon!Sam has a point here. You can't blame Sam and Dean for there father's action (if John really is responsble for Bill's death. We still don't know the whole story). The whole next scene, the "flirting", the tying her up, that scene could be beyond hot if the girl wasn't Jo. *cuts Jo out of the scene and replaces her with... hm, who could I replace her with? The first person that comes to my mind is Sarah but I actually'd like her to still be able to trust Sam in the future and as well as Sarah handeled everything in Provenance she'd probably not just be able to say "Oh, you were possessed? In that case we're fine, no problem." later. Another hunter'd be great. When I first read about Jo I hoped that she'd be a little like Faith. I didn't want a second Faith on Supernatural but, you know, the type of girl. I try to picture the scene with her right now. It'd turn out completely different. Faith'd probably even enjoy it. Dark, twisted, but much better. Definately. *mind wandering off*
(Just so we're clear: I still want Sam back. Asap!)

Sam, pay attention!
Demon!Sam is totally acting like Meg in Shadows. I can't believe I missed that the first time I watched the episode. And did you notice that demon!Sam calls Daddy "John" once? The story about Bill and John, he's so making that up to mess with Jo, though it could actually be the truth. But I don't think Meg knows what happend. She doesn't care either.
Dean comes in and in the blink of an eye demon!Sam turns back to "I can't fight it. Shoot me." Meg loves messing with peoples minds and feelings, doesn't she? I don't even want to imagine how much that scene'd have hurt if it really was Sam but the way things are I'm just fascinated by the way Meg (it's much more fun if you know that it's Meg and not just some demon) tries to play with everyone and by how many mistakes she makes. She's asking Dean to chose between Sam and Jo and expects this to be a tough decision for him? Dude, Dean'd chose Sam over everyone anytime. He'd chose Sam if it was him or the whole world going to hell. Demon!Sam misses his chance to kill Jo and gets hit by holy water. What? You thought Dean wouldn't figure it out, Meg?
I like that Dean cuts Jo free and then just leaves to follow demon!Sam.
"So who are you?"
"I've got lots of names."
Can't demons decide on one or do they just like that sentence? Demon!Sam knows that he can't really mess with Deans mind any more so he wants to kill him. Luckily he's not that good a shot or he didn't really want to kill Dean yet. The bullet "just" hits him in the shoulder and he falls into the lake. Still: Hey! *is angry*
*skips the whole Jo rescues Dean - oh, please! *rolleyes* - and gets that Dean won't call scene. The thing I like about this scene is that it looks like it could finally be her last scene on the show*
The next hunter demon!Sam pays a visit is... Bobby! Wheee! Demon!Sam cuts the phone line which gives Dean a hint where to look for him. But he may have done that on purpose. Bobby is all "Hey, great to see you. You want a beer? ... Ups, didn't I mention that I put holy water in it." Yeah, Bobby! *g*

"Don't try to con a con man"
When demon!Sam comes back to his senses he's tied to a chair under a protective symbol. Feels familiar, Meg? And Dean's expression is cold without emotions because the thing he's talking to is not Sam. It may look like him, but it's not him. But it trapped his brother and it'll pay for that. Bobby starts with the exorcism and for a while it seems to work but then demon!Sam just starts laughing. Okay, now he really scares me. *hides*

Especially when he starts reciting the exorcism and the effect is fire and flickering lights and an earth quake. But no effect on the demon. Bobby spots the branding on Sam's arm.

It's a binding link that locks the demon inside Sam's body. Some cracks on the ceiling destroy the symbol and set demon!Sam free.
"You know, when people describe the worst possible thing they say it's like hell. Well, there's a reason for that: Hell is like... well, it's like hell. Even for demons. It's a prison, made of bone and flesh and blood and fear. And you sent me back there."
"Meg."
"No, not any more. Now I'm Sam."
No, you're not. And I hope it's lying about John.
When demon!Sam hits Dean he just takes it and doesn't even try to fight back. Dean knows it's not Sam and he didn't hesitate to use holy water and an exorcism on him because that just hurt the demon. But fighting back now would probably hurt Sam as well. Plus: Since the exorcism didn't work what is he supposed to do? How is he supposed to free Sam now? Of course that's just perfect for Meg to try and mentally torture him with. Dean's weakest spot:
"And I was gona torture you, nice and slow. Like pulling the wings off an insect. But whatever I do to you it's nothing compared to what you do to yourself, is it. I can see it in your eyes, Dean. You're worthless, you couldn't save your Dad. And deep down you know that you can't save your brother. He'd have been better off without you."

But luckily there's Bobby. He destroys the binding link and frees Sam from Meg.
"Sammy?"
"Did I miss anything?"
*giggles* So great to have you back, Sam. *hugs him*
But instead of hugging him, Dean punches his brother in the face. It's a little strange way of showing it but it's pure relieve.
Bobby asks them about the hunter demon!Sam killed. Wow, that feels like so much longer ago than the beginning of the very same episode. His friends are trying to find his murderer. Great, so now they definately have some hunters on their heels, too. Before they leave Bobby gives them charms that fend off possession. Wait! There are charms to fend off possession? The boys have been hunting demons all their lifes and they didn't already have something like that? Doh!
Then the boys are back on the road. And it's one of the really rare times, Dean wants to talk. Or wants Sam to talk. And Sam tells him that he remembers some of it and he knows now that Dean won't shoot him no matter what.
"Sam, when Dad told me that I might have to kill you it was only if I couldn't save you. And if it's the last thing I do I'm gonna save you."
I can't even tell you how much I love that line. I want to hug it tight, carefully put it into a little box and carry it with me everywhere I go.
"Dude, you... you like full on had a girl inside you for like a whole week. It's pretty naughty."
*laughs and shakes head* Dean, how old are you again? But it made Sam laugh. When was the last time we saw Sam laugh?

*I know, it's not really Meg. Just look at it as a short form of "The demon that possessed Meg"
It was also great to see Bobby again. And it was kinda nice to have Meg back as well. I hated her in season one but I had completely forgotten how much fun it is to hate her.
