Do you realize that, while we know quite a few angels, we hardly know anything about their vessels? We know Jimmy and Nick, and the Winchester bloodline, and we get a small glimpse of the poor soul who said yes to Raphael, that's it. Do you ever wonder who the other vessels were, the people who were approached by an angel to hand over their bodies, and said yes. How were they treated by these beautiful and stunning, powerful and frightening creatures while being trapped with them in a body that was suddenly too small and infinitely large all at once? Did they ever regret their decision?

How about some head canon?

Balthazar
It has always been my head canon that Balthazar's vessel is Kurt Mendel.
If you don't know Odyssey 5, Kurt is a geneticist and quite possibly one of the least religious persons you will ever come across. Then again, everyone's purely scientific world view is probably challenged to some degree after they watch the world implode and are send back in time by a mysterious being that exists in a dimension you can't even properly perceive.
So when an angel comes to him, and asks him for permission to take him as a vessel, part of Kurt thinks it's ridiculous, even by his standards. Another part is too intrigued to pass this opportunity. So he says yes.
I'm never quite sure if and how much Kurt regrets this decision. I don't think Kurt himself knows.
The relationship between him and Balthazar is strange. Sometimes they are almost partners in crime, sometimes the character traits they share - and I'm not talking about their appreciation of the world's more physical pleasures - gives them a connection that is so fundamental it scares them both. Sometimes Balthazar just carelessly pushes Kurt down, reminding him that he is only a passenger is his own body anymore, and Kurt hates Balthazar more than he has ever hated anyone in his life.
But then Kurt sees Balthazar's vulnerable side, the side the angel tries to hide from everyone but can't quite hide from him. Not when they are penned up in a body that is too small for the both of them, and makes Kurt feel equally crowded and terribly alone.
Was it worth it? Even when the angel sword pierces through his body, and his soul is suddenly separated from Balthazar's grace for the first time in what feels like eternity, Kurt could not possibly say.

Inias
Sometimes I work with the head canon that Inias's vessel is a singer and songwriter from Vancouver, who was approached by Inias during his travels through the Middle East.
Inias shows respect and kindness to this chosen soul in the same way he would to any human. He doesn't feel the same love neither for humanity as a whole, like Castiel or Gabriel had, nor for this man in particular. That sort of deep affection is reserved for his brothers and sisters.
He takes good care of his vessel, and would never intentionally hurt him or let him get hurt. but he won't go out of his way to protect him either. That doesn't mean he is careless or cold. It's actually surprising how warm and sympathetic Inias can still be without showing any real affection.
Inias won't ask for permission - the one 'yes' he needs aside - or opinion, but he will be gentle in the way he gives orders and makes decisions. And if he sees a way to make things more confortable, or at least bearable for the human soul who gave his body to him, he won't hesitate to show him this kindness, as long as it does not stand in the way of his mission, the good of the Host, and the safety and well-being if his brothers and sisters.
It is only later, when Inias is in hiding, and angel and vessel are each other's only company, that they find a connection in pointing out the world's small miracles to each other in a search for comfort.

Samandriel
I like to believe that "Alfie" is really Matt Pike (the kid from "Bugs").
Either the curse ended in such a financial desaster for his family that Matt has to work at Wiener Hut to be able to afford college/university, or the peace with his father didn't last, and Wiener Hut is where he ended up.
He uses the name Alfie now, in an attempt to distance himself from a life that didn't go as planned.
One day, during a late night shift, Samandriel comes to him. Matt was never particularly religious, but he doesn't doubt Samandriel for a second. The angel is kind, and open, and honest, and he calls him Matt, always calls him Matt. He doesn't keep the downsides from him, but he promises Matt that he won't let any harm come to him.
Matt naively thinks that maybe this is his chance to finally find a purpose in his life again. For some reason he finds himself trusting Samandriel, feels drawn to him, so he agrees.
Being chained to a comet is painful. No matter how kind and gentle the comet is, it will still burn you alive. Samandriel does his best to make the experience as bearable for the young human as he can, constantly soothing him and promising him that it won't be for long.
But then Samandriel falls into Crowley's hands, and things go downhill for both of them.
Samandriel still tries to shield Matt the best he can, but there is not much he can do, and sometimes he is the one finding solace in the presence of this tiny human soul. More often than not, Matt's screams are only drowned out by Samandriel's own.
Samandriel never gets a chance to tell Matt how sorry he is for breaking his promise.
When his grace flares up, he can't see anymore how the human soul weeps for the angel, and whispers 'I forgive you.' before finding its way to Heaven, the home Samandriel will never return to.

By the way, does anyone know a website that has photos for free online use? I need them to illustrate some angel wing colour head canon I have.

LOL, you! &hearts

Your head canon of Samandriel / Alfie / Matt is gonna make me cry. The poor guy already had such a miserable ending . . . can't he have a happy "before," at least?

shutterstock.com is my go-to for all sorts of pose references. They have tons of wing refs, too. ;)

What? *innocent*
I never confuse fiction and reality. Never.

I'm sorry.
I rewatched Bugs a while ago, and this head canon just happened. I haven't been able to get rid of it since.

Thank you. It doesn't look like I'm allowed to use their photos though. Unless I'm willing to pay a ridiculous amount of money.

Wait, what? All you're doing is right-click-saving the photo itself, right? That IS allowed, and free -- I do it all the time. You just can't choose the larger sizes/resolutions or whatever.

You may be seeing something different because you're outside of the US? In that case, you could always try the photo reference section of deviantart.com . . . they have tons of angel wing refs, too. And DEFINITELY free!

Hey . . . have you heard the spoilers for SPN's next season? ;)

Hm, maybe I'm doing it wrong. I'll have to take a closer look later.

Hey . . . have you heard the spoilers for SPN's next season? ;)
The regular cast one? Yes. Not happy about it, to be honest. For me, it just means it still won't be over (sorry).

Yeah, just right-click on the photo itself. Don't click any of the links or buttons, or you'll get their overpriced price list. :)

Aww, no need to apologize -- I suspected you might feel that way, but just thought I'd check.

Not gonna lie, I'm not overly thrilled about it myself. The "sell-by" date is long past on that particular thread, Show is running it into the ground, and I can't figure out how this will be worked into the plot. Not sure I trust Show to do it properly, you know?

But . . . never say never, as they say. ;) We'll see what happens.

I don't trust the show with any of the angels anymore. I just wish they'd move away from them completely. Then the show could carry on with whatever it wants, and I could finally really move on.
But there is nothing I can do. So I'll just have to accept that I'm stuck in this weird situation for another year, and hope it's the last (for me, not necessarily the show).
