Purgatory

A lot of people seem to assume that - in the Supernatural universe - angels and demons go to Purgatory when they die. The more I think about this, the less sense it makes.

We know that "monsters" end up in Purgatory when they die. And even though Dean tends to use "monster" and "supernatural being" interchangeably, I don't think that this includes every non-human (or non-animal) creature out there.

I think to only applies to creatures who have either been created by Eve, are descendants of creatures created by Eve, or have been turned by them. In other words, you will find a lot of Vamires, Werewolves, Rugarus, Djinns, Jefferson Starships, Strigas, Wendigos etc. there. I'm not sure about gods or other deities.

Here is what you probably won't find in Purgatory:

Vengeful Sprits: Ghosts and spirits are basically human souls stuck on Earth after death. I'm not sure what happens to them when you burn their bones. In IMTOD Tessa hints that Dean won't be able to change his mind later, if he doesn't come with her now. Maybe that means that he just can't move on on his own any more, but burning his bones will still send him on to Heaven or Hell. The other possibility is that "killing" a spirit means that the soul is destroyed and ceases to exist - which seems to be what happened with Mary in Home.

Demons: Demons were initially created by Lucifer, not Eve. They are not Creatures of Purgatory, but Hell. If they are killed, and no just send back downstairs, I guess they are gone for good.

Angels: I love the thought of Gabriel and Balthazar escaping from Purgatory when Cas opened the door, and that they may even be with Cas right now, but unfortunately, as comforting as it would be, I can't believe that theory.*
Two reasons: One, angels were created by God, not Eve. So why would they return to her when they die?
Two, there is always talk about the souls of Purgatory, and Castiel has stated very clearly that angels have no soul. Monsters do, apparently.

Death, God, Eve, potentially other gods, and other creatures who seem to be of a similar rank: Please don't ask me what happens to them. I have no idea. Trying to figure out where Eve ended up when Dean killed her gives me a headache.

* Doesn't mean that I can't hold on to my head canon that Castiel and Balthazar were grace mates and that Balthazar's grace is still with Cas.

Has anything about angels' and/or demons' afterlife ever been stated in canon? I can't remember...
Tbh I've never thought about it. But I don't think they go to Purgatory either. I'd say angels' grace was released into the air or smth (like the souls in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, just becoming part of the world, atoms and molecules and suchlike). As for demons, I don't know. Either the same, or completely destroyed.
I'd like to believe that ghosts whose bones are burnt just move on to Heaven or Hell or wherever. I don't like to think that Mary won't ever appear again. I really want the boys to meet her again.

A lot of people believe that? Huh. Not me. Monsters end up in Purgatory - vamps, werewolves, skinwalkers etc etc. Stuff with teeth and claws mostly. Though I figure Djinn too.

When demons and angels die, well, I've always figured they just stop existing. Which is sad. I toyed with the idea of their being some kind of limbo for a while, but it was all a bit wishy-washy and I couldn't figure out a way for it to work, so...

I agree with you anyways, is what I'm trying to say :p

I've seen a lot of posts mainly on tumblr about this. It's mostly people saying they hope that Gabriel and/or Balthazar escaped. I think I also remember a few about Azazel and Lilith.

I think my main problem with this - other than it seems to contradict canon - is that it means that there really is no dead for good on the show. Everyone ends up somewhere with a door you can open if you're just stubborn enough.
