Guess I kinda lost my head

Dear show, don't you dare screw up Castiel's character as much as you did in this episode. Ever. Again. Do you hear me? This was the first time ever, that I could not explain the things he did because they just. Didn't. Make. Any. Fucking. Sense. At. All.
It was also the first time that I wished Castiel had not been in an episode.
This whole episode made me so angry. I still feel like screaming and throwing something at my tv. ARG!
*takes a deep breath*
There were, however, a few scenes that were actually pretty great, so I'm just going to concentrate on them and forget the rest ever happened:
Crowley torturing shapeshifter!Crowley. I admit, it had me confused for a moment. And it was such a great scene. "Guess I kinda lost my head." Oh, Crowley, never change!
Just overall, Crowley. I love how calm and in control he is. That's exactly what makes him so threatening and amazing. This smile when he catches the boys. That slightly annoyed look when the alarm goes off. That's my demon. &hearts
"If you don't help us I will hunt you down and kill you." - "Will you, boy? How?"
I can't believe Sam is threatening Cas like that. Then again, Sam has no soul. But I'm so glad Castiel steps up and reminds Sam who he is talking to. He is nice to the Winchester boys and lets them get away with a lot of crap because he genuinely likes them. But he is an angel and he could pretty much kill them with a snap of his finger. And he is starting to lose his patience. If it wasn't for Dean, Sam would probably regret his words by now.
The talk between Cas and Dean about Sam's soul. Cas is so hesitant to tell Dean about his worries. That Sam's soul has been in the cage with Michael and Lucifer, two very angry and frustrated archangels - and Adam. Why does no one ever mention Adam? - for so long now that there is hardly any chance that they will get it back unscarred. Mutilated. To a point where death would be a relieve. Cas knows what this news will do to Dean and he probably knows that Dean won't listen but he has to tell him. Warn him. Prepare him.
And Dean's reaction is exactly the one he's been showing all season. If Sam comes back wrong then Cas will just have to fix him. You know, in a way it's almost flattering that Dean believes that Cas can just solve all their problems. But despite being an angel in full control of his powers again, Castiel is not all-powerful and Dean will have to learn and accept that at some point. And he needs to stop having a go at Castiel whenever the angel is not able to help him. Seriously. Cas is doing everything he can, which is more than Dean has any right to ask for.
Castiel's "Of course." sounds so weary. He seems close to giving up on trying to make Dean understand. The question is, what will be the necessary consequences if he does?
Cas killing Crowley. I can't believe I'm putting this on the good scenes list because: CROWLEY! NOOOOOOO! *sobs*
Not to mention that it was incredibly stupid of the show to get rid of the best bad guy they ever had, in the middle of the season, and with him of pretty much of their entire main story line. Which is why there is a part of me that is trying to figure out how and why Crowley could have tricked them into believing that they succeeded in killing him. I keep picturing him sitting somewhere, a glass of Whisky in his hand. Then the camera zooms back and reveals Gabriel next to him, chewing on a chocolate bar, and they both shake their heads and laugh about how anyone could really believe they were dead. Please. Trickster. King of Hell.
But seriously, they can't really be stupid enough to kill off Crowley for good, right? *denial*
Anyway, despite all that, the scenes was really well done.
First Crowley tells them pretty much the same thing Cas told Dean. That Sam's soul is pretty much beyond saving by now and no one in their right mind would still want it back.
Then he owns Meg. King of hell, bitch!
And then Castiel arrives for the showdown. And those two, opposite each other in one scene? That's pretty much as good as it gets. Cas being all fierce and bamf and serious and Crowley being his snarky, sarcastic self. "Castiel. Haven't seen you all season.".
It's probably not the best idea to tease Castiel about how things are not going very well in Heaven. But of course Crowley didn't know that Cas went to find his bones.
There is the finger snipping again, when Crowley releases Sam and Dean. Just like when he let the burns on Sam's hand disappear again. Come on, there has to be some significance to that.
And then, without really any warning or hesitation, after Crowley says he can't return Sam's soul, Cas sets Crowley's bones on fire. And as much as I hate it, it makes perfect sense. Crowley is a demon after all and Cas shows no regret whatsoever. Why would he? He never would have hesitated to kill a demon but he has also hardened in the last year. That's what fighting a war does to you.
And just like that Crowley is gone but at least it was Cas who killed him. Do demons go to Purgatory when they die? What about angels?
The only reason I'm not a muddle of tears right now is that I still refuse to believe that this really is the last we've seen of Crowley. This was too easy and it just doesn't make much sense, story wise. So I'm holding on to the hope that things are not quite what they seem. Crowley cannot be dead. I refuse to believe that.
The last scene is odd. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Cas finally gets a thank you from Dean and even an offer to help him with his problems. But suddenly it's all about them being friends and Dean understands that Cas has his own problems and can't always be there to help them? Where is that coming from? That's what I have wanted ever since 6x03 but the way we get it here it just pretty OOC for Dean right now. So, yeah, not sure what to make of this.
You know, this could have been a really great episode in the hands of the right writer and I think that's what annoys me most about it.

Date: 2010-12-05 12:24 pm (UTC)desireexperiences. I thought it WAS in character and was happy to have canonical proof that Cas is unhappy with the war in Heaven and wants to be back on Earth more and doing all the stuff he started to learn about last season but never got the chance to properly explore (like kissing, for example :p)I get what you mean about the last scene, it was a little sudden. But that's how this show has always worked with that kind of thing. Dean is a very closed off kind of man, when he gets emotional he does it suddenly and without warning a lot of the time, just blurting out emotional stuff he's been keeping under wraps. Like when he came clean about his time in Hell and stuff. So it worked for me that he'd suddenly start blurting out stuff about Cas being a friend after a life threatening situation, because it would have been too embarrassing for him to come at it slow and in a less charged moment.
Personally, I would have liked if Cas was a little less forgiving of Dean and been a bit huffy and 'yes, it's about time you care about the war I'm fighting!' but it seems the show's moved Cas past that kind of anger and into weariness. Which I guess you can argue was needed as something for Dean to respond to in order to prompt him to sympathise with Cas and acknowledge that Cas is going through something big and that they should be a bit more caring about it.
IDK. I just didn't find it as OOC as all that. It all worked me.
Hope future episodes are better for you!

Date: 2010-12-05 01:09 pm (UTC)The main reasons why I have issues with this episode and Castiel's characterisation are:
1. With everything that's going on in Heaven and Castiel losing ground and being so busy with that all season, suddenly he has time to sit around aimlessly and watch porn while Sam and Dean do research?
2. That boner thing. Castiel trying to figure out sexuality, fine. I have no problems with that. But then they should do it right and not use it for some cheap jokes. To me it felt like that scene was written by a 12-year-old. Plus, but that's just my personal view, I kinda would expect an angel in full possession of his powers to also have full control over his vessel.
3. Castiel kissing Meg. Meg kissing him to steal the angel sword worked great. But Cas suddenly deciding to kiss back a demon, one he had just called an abomination, and in the middle of a very serious, life-threatening mission? Doesn't make much sense to me.
4. The dialogue just didn't sound right to me in large parts. Like they were trying too hard to make the characters sound "cool". It just didn't come across as natural as it usually does. Which, by the way, is the main reason why I hate the German dubbing of the show. It has exactly the same problem. Just in every single episode.
About the last scene: You are absolutely right about the way Dean talks about his emotions. But usually you can see them shine through in his actions. And the way he's treated Castiel all season stands in stark contrast to what he claimed in that last scene. And that's what throws me off a little. But, hey, still glad that Dean stopped being a dick for once.
Sorry for being so negative. I hate it that I can't like the episode because I think the concept was great but the execution - by which I mainly mean the writing - just sucked, imo.
Still glad that you enjoyed it and I'm sure there are going to be episodes where I can just join the fangirling again and tell everyone how much I love my show.

Date: 2010-12-05 01:57 pm (UTC)I'll try and argue my side of your points anyway, but I doubt it will make a difference because it can't change the writing, and if you think the writing sucked and I thought it was good then we're simply incompatable when it comes to this.
Here I go anyhow:
1. I was confused about why Cas was moping around with the boys at first, considering he snaps at Sam about having come 'mid-battle.' BUT, that was until his confession in the final scene that he wishes he could stay on Earth. That made it all work for me because it implies that, really, he doesn't want to be part of the war at all and was using the boys and their mission as an excuse to stay out of Heaven as long as possible. It's not like canon has given us evidence that Cas is leader of the resistence or anything, so I figure there would have been other angels up there leading the charge. It was selfish of Cas to leave the battle, yes, but that's the point - he HAS this selfish desire to put himself first sometimes now and he's not above trying to get away with it.
2. The boner thing was actually a bit of a squick for me. It's been done in fic at lot and I've always found it kinda daft. That was fanservice plan and simple and I can understand complete if you're unhappy about it. I got over it because it was referenced and passed over so quick. Also, Cas wasn't in control of his vessel in Bloody Valentine, and while there were extenuating circumstances there that makes it canon enough for me that very strong human sensation might catch an angel unawares sometimes. Meaning I don't think a surprise boner contradicts anything.
3. As I say in my post, I don't think 'abomination' means physically repulsive, it means against Heaven and evil and criminal and stuff like that (Cas called Sam an abomination, after all, and he clearly doesn't find Sam repulsive). Ergo, I think after watching porn that involved punishing a babysitter for being 'wrong,' an 'abomination' would actually seem desirable to Cas. And as to them being in the middle of an important, life threatening mission - isn't that EXACTLY when you'd want to try out something you haven't tried before? It's a very human thing to want to get a last sexual thrill before a battle and since Cas is more human than most angels now that actually makes it MORE understandable for me, especially since it wasn't just a last chance at a sexual thrill, but his FIRST. Okay, so maybe Cas wasn't worried about himself dying, but Meg easily could have, so it was potentially his one and only chance to learn what a sexual experience with HER would be like.
4. I'm afraid I didn't notice anything weird about the dialogue. Sorry :(
I agree that Dean's dickishness contrasts with the last scene, though. But I'm taking this last scene as a kind of apology for all that. Or, if not an apology, a show of how Dean has settled down now and is changing his ways in regards to Cas. And that's good enough for me.
Anyway, with any luck Balthazar will be back soon and that will make everything better :D

Date: 2010-12-05 02:30 pm (UTC)I can sort of see your points but they didn't come across for me in the episode which, I guess, gets us back to my issues with the way the episode was written. And there's just nothing to be done about that. But it probably also means that the overall storyline still works for me and it is just an issue I have with this particular episode. That's encouraging.
Also, Cas wasn't in control of his vessel in Bloody Valentine, and while there were extenuating circumstances there that makes it canon enough for me that very strong human sensation might catch an angel unawares sometimes. Meaning I don't think a surprise boner contradicts anything.
In My Bloody Valentine, I always felt the point was that Cas wasn't in full possession of his powers and that was why Famine could get to him. But again, I guess that's just my interpretation.
I'm not trying to say that the boner really contradicts anything that has been stated in the show but it still felt out of place to me.
Anyway, with any luck Balthazar will be back soon and that will make everything better :D
Yes, I can't wait to have him back. :D
