Summary: Stories don't die

When the 10th Doctor opened his eyes again he found himself in the middle of nowhere. Quite literally.
"Now this is interesting."
He experimentally wiggled his fingers and then tried to jump up and down. The latter wasn't that easy without as much as a ground to push off. Or anything like up and down.
"On second thought, it's a little dull with nothing there."
He turned around and spotted a figure.
"Oh, hello there."
His opponent looked vaguely human but it was impossible to figure out if it was male or female, young or old. Happy or sad.
"Am I dead then?", the Doctor enquired.
"Yes and no", the being answered with a voice that didn't even seem to carry a sound.
"Okay then." He turned his head to look around again. "Sorry, but what exactly is this place?"
"There is another world", the being explained. "Another universe, where your life is a story. A great story known to millions. They are your unseen companions. Unknown to you, they have been traveling with you through space and time. To places they could never have seen without you."
For a brief moment the Doctor looked puzzled but then his eyes suddenly brightened with realisation.
"A story. In the imagination of millions. Stories don't die. Stories get retold. They get reinvented. They lead to more stories. More places and adventures than even I could ever imagine. Oh, that's brilliant. That's - Wait a minute. This is no place of imagination. Let alone the imagination of millions. Minds, imagination, they are full of hopes and dreams and ideas. There's nothing here. So what is this place?"
"It's just a transition. Those people, they need you to take them to all those places just as much as you need them to invent them."
The Doctor whirled around. "Of course! If it is my story they make up I have to be there. Let's see. How do I get there? You probably know, don't you?" He turned back to the being for an answer. It was gone.
"A little rude to just disappear like that. Well, I guess I'll have to figure it out for myself then. That shouldn't be too difficult. Well, it should. Impossible really. How do I get there?" He furrowed his brows in concentration and ran his fingers through his hair and over his face. "Think, Doctor, think! How do I - Oh... " He looked up with a big smile on his face. "A world of thought and imagination. And I'm brilliant. But more importantly: So are you." He stepped forward and ran his hand over the wooden frame of the TARDIS that stood there like it had never been anywhere else.
He opened the door and stepped into the familiar control room "Now, old girl, ready for some new adventures? I certainly am!" And with those words he started to swirl around the control panel, pushing buttons faster than the eye could follow. "Off to anywhere, anywhen! You decide." He grabbed the main control lever and his grin became even wider when he pushed it for the TARDIS to start.
"Allons-y!"
