I'm not sure what to think about the MotW. I mean it was a little bit ridiculous, wasn't it? That girl who's been in a coma for years, poisened by her stepmother. Her spirit wandering around and trying to tell her father - who just happens to read fairy tales to her - by making people act out fairy tales and kill.
But that didn't stop it from being a mostely fun episode with some very serious scenes.

What fairy tales did we get? "The three little pigs" - I didn't get that one right away - "Hänsel and Gretel", "Cinderella", "Little red riding hood", that frog that's hopping around all episode and the spirit itself: "Snow white"
And Sammy knows them all.

"Dude, could you be more gay?"
...
"Don't answer that."

*rofl* Didn't you listen, Dean? Fairy tales, stories full of sex and violence. Because I'm sure Sam knows the original versions. Brothers Grimm, first edition. If he was lucky they wrote them down in Latin. ;)

But hovering over everything: The deal.
Starting with the fight Dean and Sam have in the car right at the beginning of the episode.
Sam has a very simple plan: Summon the Crossroad demon, either force her to break the deal or kill her with the Colt. Demon gone, deal off.
I don't think it's that easy.
But the most important part is: Dean won't take any risk because if anything goes wrong he's gonna lose Sam again and Sam wants to take every chance and whatever risk necessary because if he doesn't he's gonna lose Dean. Neither of them can live without the other. Both are willing to give their life in a heartbeat to keep their brother save. And that's why they fight. Oh, boys.

"You're not Dad."

It's not like you've ever listened to him, Sam. But, yeah, he didn't take orders from his father, he sure as hell won't take orders from his brother.

Dean changes subject and asks Sam about the killer. Which is a very good idea. This fight is not going to get them anywhere right now and they both have to calm down and concentrate on something else.
At this stage they think they're dealing with a werewolf and this sad and defeated look on Sam's face... I'm not sure if it's entirely because he feels like he's lost the fight for now or if part of it is the memories that "werewolf" holds for him.

The next time the subject comes up is when they interogate a victim.

"Those were my brothers. He killed my brothers. How would you feel?"
"I can't imagine anything worse."

Dean knows exactly what Sam's thinking about right now but he continues to concentrate on the job and surely won't bring it up again.

And of course Sam gets to be the scetch artist.

It's cute how Sam tries to come up with an motive for a demon and fails. *g*

While Dean's out to "stop the big, bad wolf" Sam tries to tell Kelly's father the truth about her stepmother. And he ends up telling him the whole truth. That's the second time Sam goes Ghost Whisperer, helping a spirit to deliver it's message and go on. And he's all calm and sympathetic. He's really good with this part of their job. The part where it is about helping people, human and supernatural.

"Kelly was the most important thing in my life. But I should have let her go a long time ago."
[...]
"You know, what he said, it's some good advice."
"Is that what you want me to do, Dean? Just let you go?"

Never gonna happen. Because the difference is (a) Dean is still alive and conscious. Sam hasn't lost this fight yet. and (b) Dean isn't just going to die. He's going to hell. Does he really think Sam is just going to watch that happen?
And by the way: Dean didn't really take that advise when he brought Sam back, did he? Hey, I'm not saying I wish he hadn't though I wish he had found another way. I'm just saying... you know.

I think Dean walking away here is a great but so very sad image.

And in the middle of the night Sam's leaving on his own, summoning the Crossroad Demon. Something Dean'd never let him do if he knew about it. I wasn't really sure at the beginning what Sam was planing. At that moment I didn't think about the fight at the beginning of the episode. So my first thought was if Sam was planning to sort of reverse the deal. You know, offer his souls for Dean's at the end of the year.
But (luckily?) Sam had something entirely different in mind.

There's one thing I don't like about that next scene. It's nice that Sandy has a guest appearance on the show but did it have to be an important scene like this? It took me out of the story and my mind was more on how difficult it must have been for Jared to act that cold towards Sandy than on Sam and the demon.

Anyway: Sam points the gun at her and tells her to call the deal off or he'll shoot her and end the deal the way. Of course she doesn't go all: "Gosh, you're right. Dean's free. Have a nice life."
Instead she questions if Sam really wants to break the deal. Talks about how annoying Dean has been lately. Jada, jada...
Of course Sam really wants to break the deal. I don't have any doubts about that. Yes, Dean annoys Sam once in a while and he can be a pain. But he's Sam's brother and the most important person in his life. Nothing will ever change that and nothing will ever change the fact that Sam loves his brother and will do anything to save him just like Dean'd do anything to save Sam. So, dear Crossroad Demon, save it. Because you won't get anywhere with this. That's a bond that's too strong to break or even raise any doubts.
But when she tells Sam that the deal'll still be valid even if he shoots her she might be telling the truth.
I have to admit I was a pretty shocked when Sam shot her after all. Funny thing is: The deal might be off now. If she lied. But there's no way of telling until the year's over and waiting for that is a little risky. Shooting the demon who might have been his only chance to find the demon that holds the contract doesn't sound like the smartest idea. Think before you act, Sam. That's what you're good at, remember?
Then again: Ruby probably knows a thing or two about this as well.

Talking about Ruby - hey, we officially know her name now. Was about time: How did the Crossroad Demon know that she's helping Sam? *is suspicious*

Is it just me or did Sam look slightly shocked about his own actions right after he'd shot the Crossroad Demon? Like it took him a moment to realise what he just did. It reminds me of last episode when it took him a while to realised that by killing the demon he had killed the two possessed humans as well and how he in a way regretted it then.

Oh, Sammy, my desperate falling angel, what path are you willing to go down to save your brother? Consciously and even more subconsciously. I just hope you'll find your way back in the end.
