Croatoan

Dean walks down a hallway pulling out a gun. The look in his face is grim and I don't like this. It looks like there's something really wrong. He enters a room where a guy's tied to a chair and points the gun at him. Three other people are standing in the room seemingly unsure what to do. The guy begs for his life saying that "it" is not in him. Dean's face stays motionless when he says that he has no choice and pulls the trigger twice.

Sam's coming out of his vision on the floor of a motel room.

The boys are driving to Rivergrove where Sam vision took place. If Sam wants to prevent it from happening this isn't exactly the brightest idea but I see why they're going there anyway. The boys are talking about Sam's vision.

"Well, I'm sure I had a good reason."
"I sure hope so."
"What does that mean?"

That means that what Dean did in the vision just felt wrong. It didn't look like he killed something evil, it looked like he killed someone.
Guys, stop saying "fine" already.

In Rivergrove Sam spots a man from his vision, Mark, who can point them to the direction of the guy that Dean shot, Duane. And there's something else catching Sam's attention. A single word carved into the wood of a telephone pole:

"Roanoke was one of the first English colonies in America, late 1500s?"
"Oh yeah, yeah, I do remember that. The only thing they left behind was a single word carved in a tree. Croatoan."
"Yeah. And I mean, there were theories — Indian raid, disease, but nobody knows what really happened. They were all just gone. I mean, wiped out overnight."

So we have one of Sam's visions, which are always about to THE demon and the other special children and this word that doesn't mean anything good either. This seems to be big so the Winchester boys think about getting help from Bobby or Ellen. But their phones are dead and so is the pay phone.

"I'll tell you one thing. If I was gonna massacre a town, that'd be my first step."

Not good. Plus Dean really quickly agrees on getting help from Ellen. Remember "Simon Said" when he didn't want her to know a thing about all this? How serious does that mean he thinks this is?

They go looking for Duane but just find his brother Jake and his father who tell them that Duane is fishing and they don't know when he'll be back and they're just acting pretty strange. So Sam and Dean sneak to a window at the back of the house and watch father and son infect their wife/mother who's tied to a chair, with their blood. Sam and Dean break through the back door to save her. Dean shoots the father, just like that. Jake escapes through the window.

The boys bring the mother, Beverly, to a clinic and meet Pam and Dr. Lee there, the two other persons who were in the room when Dean shot Duane in Sam's vision. Beverly tells Dr. Lee that everything was fine and suddenly her son and husband had "the devil in them." Of course this catches Sam's and Dean's attention. They assume it could be a mass possession though there were nor demonic signs whatsoever and Dean pretty much blames Sam for not having shot Jake. Pardon me? He may've been possessed but there probably still was a boy inside who'd have died too if Sam had shot him. I'm really worried about Dean right now and more afraid that he he may become a killer than that Sam may become one.

The Winchester boys split up: Dean drives to the nearest town to get help or find a working phone or something and Sam stays in the clinic to keep everyone save. Dean finds an empty car. There's a bullett whole in the windscreen, smashed windows, a bloody child seat in the back, more blood on the seats and a bloody knife lying on the street. And the liscence plate says: "WTF 4C7" Yeah, exactly: WTF?
When Dean drives on he's soon stopped by a roadblock. Jake is there and some other men with guns. They tell him something about quarantine and when they ask him to step out of the car he turns around and the men start firing. They shoot at Metallicar! How dare they?!
On the way back Dean meets Mark again. Obviously whatever is going on has spread all over town and Dean and Mark are pointing guns at each other neither of them knowing if the other one is infected.

"What's going on with everybody?"
"I don't know."
"My neighbour, Mr. Rogers, he..."
"You've got a neighbor named Mr. Rogers?"
"Not anymore."

*giggles* Sorry, this whole thing is not funny at all. But that line actually is.
They agree that they won't get anywhere this way and drive back to the clinic still pointing guns at each other.

Meanwhile Dr. Lee finds out that Beverly's husband had a virus and there's something in his blood that looks like sulphur. So, this is a demonic virus? Erm... eeek! And since Beverly came in contact with the blood she might have the virus too. And she does. She attacks Dr. Lee and Sam but Sam's able to knock her down. Pam is close to paniking but Sam calms her down a little by telling her that help is coming when he hears the Impala outside. You can easily hear that it's the Impala. She really has her very own sound.
Dean comes in with Mark and the brothers tell each other what they have learned. Sam's also looked through John's Journal and found something:

"Dad always had a theory about Croatoan. He thought it was a demon's name. Sometimes known as Deva or sometimes Reesha. A demon of plague and pestilence."

Wait: Deva? We had Daevas in "Shadows". I know it's spelled slightly different but could it still be the same thing. Sort of? Or at least connected? I know that in Persian mythologie Daevas are demons that cause plagues and diseases. And I think their name is the origin of the word "devil". I guess I'll have to do some serious research during the hiatus.

Dean also learns about Beverly being infected and he and Mark decide that they have to kill her. So after asking Sam if he's sure she's infected, Dean shoots her while she's huddled in a corner and crying. And he's not even blinking or hesitating or... something.

Their situation is bad: They are only 5 people in the clinic, there's whole city of infected people and they have to get out to warn people because they don't know how far and how fast the virus will spread. Luckily Sam was "Young MacGuyver" in a former life and can put together something. Like explosives.

Duane knocks at the door pretty scared about what's going on and they let him in. He's bleeding and since there's no way of telling if he is infected until the virus takes affect they tie him up. Sam sees his vision coming true and talks to Dean and begs him not to kill Duane.

"Hey look, man, I'm not happy about this, okay? But it's a tough job and you know that."
"It's supposed to be tough, Dean. We're supposed to struggle with this, that's the whole point."
"What does that buy us?"
"A clear conscience, for one!"
"Well, it's too late for that."
"What the hell's happened to you?"
"What?"
"You might kill an innocent man, and you don't even care! You don't act like yourself anymore, Dean. Hell, you know what? You're acting like one of those things out there."

Dean pushes past Sam and locks his brother in the lab. And Sam can just watch his vision becoming reality. When Dean points the gun at Duane I was sitting in front of the screen, holding my breath and begging Dean not to do this. And I didn't breath out till Dean lowers the gun not able to shoot Duane. It turns out that Duane is not infected and Dean doesn't answer Sams question on why he didn't shoot him. To be honest I don't care. The important thing is that he didn't. Even though we later learn that Duane is one of the demon's kids. Which means shooting him wouldn't have had any effect anyway.

Later Sam's alone with Pam and she locks the door and attacks him, infecting him with the virus before Dean can break the door open and shoot her. OMG! I know that they can't let Sam die but... Sam and Dean don't know that.

And what's following now is even more heartbreaking than anything we've seen on the show before. I didn't think that was even possible:
Everyone in he room thinks the same think: They have to shoot Sam before the virus takes effect. And Dean'd agree with them if this wasn't about Sam. But it is and Dean'd rather let the world go to hell - like literally - than let anyone hurt his brother. Sam knows that but he also "knows" that there is no way.

"Dean, they're right. I'm infected. Just give me the gun and I'll do it myself."

And Dean knows it, too. But there still is no way he's leaving Sam behind. But he can tell everyone else to leave:

"Get the hell out of here, that's what. Take my car. You've got the explosives, there's an arsenal in there. You two go with him. You've got enough firepower to handle anything now."

He's giving them the Impala which is a little bit of a shock. But of course Sam's more important than anyone and anything and I think this scene makes Metallicar the third main character even more. Because this is not just "Take my car". It's more like "Trust her. She'll bring you out here savely." After all some"one" has to take care of that since Dean is going to stay.

Sam's begging Dean to leave him behind and he's crying. He's not crying because he's going to die. He's crying because Dean chooses to die with him and Sam know's he will probably infect his brother and kill him. And that thought must be so hard to bear.

"Dean, don't do this. Just get the hell out of here."
"No way."
"Give me my gun and leave."
"For the last time, Sam. No."
"This is the dumbest thing you've ever done."
"Oh, I don't know about that. Remember that waitress in Tampa?"
"Dean, I'm sick. It's over for me. It doesn't have to be for you."
"No?"
"No, you can keep going."
"Who says I want to?"
"What?"
"I'm tired, Sam. I'm tired of this job, this life. This weight on my shoulders, man. I'm tired of it."
"So what, so you're just going to give up? You're just gonna lay down and die? Look, Dean, I know this stuff with Dad has..."
"You're wrong. It's not about Dad. I mean, part of it is, sure, but..."
"What is it about?"

OMG! Sammy! Dean! *sobs*
I want to help Sam to convince Dean to get out. Because there's really nothing he can do. He has to get out to... yeah, to do what? Sam's everything Dean has left. There's nothing waiting for him out there. If he loses Sam he's lost everything and that's why he has to stay.

In this moment Dr. Lee comes back to tell then that everyone has vanished. So, it was much easier to escape and that's when they decided to stay? With the only infected person that's left? Don't get me wrong: I'm glad they did because otherwise they'd have taken Metallicar with them but I don't really get it.

It turns out that Sam's immune to the virus. Really? On second thought it doesn't. Because when Dr. Lee checks the other blood samples there's no trace of the virus any more either. So Sam's just the only one infected who didn't vanish. Could be because he's one of the special kids. Could be because the virus didn't show effect yet. Actually we don't know anything about what happend.

Mark and Duane leave town and in the middle of nowhere Meg Duane asks Mark to pull over because he has to make a call. He slits Mark's throat and catches his blood in a bowl.

"It's over, you'll be pleased. I don't think any more tests are necessary.
The Winchester boy, definitely immune as expected.
Yes, of course. Nothing left behind."

So it looks like Sam really IS immune. To something. I assume that it's the virus Duane's talking about but in fact he could be talking about something else. But whatever it is it looks like all of this was just a test to make sure about it. I guess that does mean that Sam's special special. Because if they'd test all the special children like that, with the population of whole towns just vanishing, someone'd have noticed by now.

The last scene is very peacful and probably the brightest scene of the whole show so far: The Impala is parked by a river or a lake. Sam and Dean are leaning against a fence and drinking beer.

"So. Last night. You want to tell me what the hell you were talking about?"
"What do you mean?"
"What do I mean? I mean you said you were tired of the job. And that it wasn't just because of Dad."
"Forget it."
"No, I can't. No way."
"Come on man, I thought we were both going to die. You can't hold that over me."
"No, no, no, no. You can't pull that crap with me, man. You're talking."
"And what if I don't?"
"Then I guess I'll just have to keep asking until you do."
"I don't know, man. I just think maybe we ought to... go to the Grand Canyon."
"What?"
"Yeah, you know, all this driving back and forth across country, you know, I've never been to the Grand Canyon? Or we could go to T.J. Or Hollywood, see if we can bang Lindsey Lohan."
"You're not making any sense."
"I just think we should take a break from all this. Why do we gotta get stuck with all the responsibility, you know? Why can't we live life a little bit?"

No, Dean, you're not just talking about taking a break. This sounds more like: "I wish you could live a normal life like you always wanted. But I know you won't. I wish I could just take you on a road trip. To the Grand Canyon. To Hollywood. And forget all this. Forget the demons, forget the fighting. Leave this all behind us. But I can't. So I want to take you to the Grand Canyon or to Hollywood now. While we still have time. While we still can. Before everything is going to hell."

"Why are you saying all this? [...] No, no, no, no, Dean. You're my brother, all right? So whatever weight you're carrying let me help a little bit."
"I can't. I promised."
"Who?"
"Dad."
"What are you talking about?"
"Right before Dad died he told me something. He told me something about you."
"What? Dean, what did he tell you?"

I knew this'd happen. I knew the episode'd end there. KRIPKE! You can't do this! Not with the hiatus ahead of us. Part of me is almost glad that we still don't know and I can try to tell myself that I might overreact and it might not be as bad as I think. But another part of me knows that the longer we'll have to wait for the secret to be revealed the more my fantasy is going to run wild.

If you're looking for me: I'm in the corner over there humming Metallica. And I won't come out until the next episode airs.
