It's San Diego Comic Con

I haven't read up on all the spoilers from Comic Con, and some things still have me a little worried, but overall it sounds like they are heading in the exact direction I want them to go.
Here are the two spoilers from the press room that have me excited about the new season the most:
On the broad strokes of next season: The boys have spent a significant amount of time apart from each other, when they reunite they're coming from slightly different perspectives -- or renewed perspectives on life, it takes a special sort of quest to get them back in the mire together and it's one that again, is very near and dear to their hearts and they're very much interested in going on the offensive. -Jeremy Carver
On where we'll find Sam and Dean mentally next season: "Maybe a little shocked to realize that in this profound period of separation, they've figured out how to survive without each other. That's part of it, a little bit growing up and realizing that they can't be the only things to each other or they have too closed a world or too closed an emotional complex. [They'll meet] new people, have new relationships, and are looking outward from this partnership that is both highly functional in terms of saving the world but also highly dysfunctional in terms of how you might relate to the world." - Ben Edlund
Yes, yes, yes. This is everything I wanted out of the Purgatory storyline. For the Winchester boys to finally spend some time apart and grow as individuals, have relationships with other characters, and finally escape that claustrophobic atmosphere that the show had built up for a few seasons now. The one that seemed to leave no room for other characters and actual character development.
On Castiel's arc next season: "I think he's -- in the most general sense -- he's moving back towards his roots in a way. He's an angel who's had all these strange experiences with free will and he's actually starting to gravitate back towards ... towards home in a sense, but that's gonna be a different home because the angels' home has been destroyed. He's got a story to play, but it'll take a little longer than the other ones because we kind of front-load it with the boys and then bring him in." - Ben Edlund
I like the sound of that, of Castiel finding back to his root and gravitating back home, with the explicit mention that his roots are being an angel.
I disagree with the phrasing of the angel's home being destroyed. Heaven is still there, and I'm sure there are still angels. But yes, Castiel's garrison is gone, so there is no one left he was really close to, and I guess the other angels won't welcome him back with open arms like Inias was willing to. So yeah, I guess that makes sense, as tragic as it is.
I sincerly hope that "home" will still be the other angels in some form. Like the ones from his garrison who are in hiding maybe?
Last night, after the panel, some people were frearking out that maybe we will see Castiel only in flashbacks, and maybe he never makes it out of Purgatory. Whenever there is talk about Dean getting out of Purgatory, Cas is never mentioned. It's suddenly like he doesn't even exist in that storyline. So I posted this on tumblr:
"What if Castiel decides to stay in Purgatory because they meet Balthazar and Gabriel and the rest of Castiel's garrison there, and he doesn't want to leave them again?"
That would fit with this spoiler, wouldn't it? It's probably still wishful thinking, but a girl can dream, right? The only thing I want is for Cas to find back to his family, his angel family. If we can have that, I don't even mind if he is only in a few flashbacks in a couple of episode. I don't want my angel on screen as much as possible - well, of course I do, but it's not the important part - I want a storyline that does him justice, and doesn't completely screw him over for once. And while this spoiler is so vague that it could be something else entirely, it has me hopeful.
Please don't let me down, Jeremy? ♥

Date: 2012-07-16 06:36 am (UTC)As for Castiel, initially there wasn't much information because they've been keeping everything kind of hush-hush, but little things have been revealed here and there, and all can potentially lead to be an awesome arc. I don't mind him appearing in the flashbacks at first, just as long as we get him (and the angels) arc somewhere in the season and let that awesomeness happen.
I predict by mid-season we'll be seeing more of that.
Just, yeah. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high, considering we've been burned by this show before, however I am confident that the show is in good hands just basing off of what was said by Carver and Edlund alone. They really know their shit, they know about the structure of storytelling which hasn't happened in a while, so I am anxious to see how this all plays out.

Date: 2012-07-16 06:51 am (UTC)When Sera was show runner, I'd read her interviews and desperately try to find something positive in them. To the point where I went: 'Okay, that really makes no sense, and does not sound like the characters I know, but maybe that came across wrong and she actually meant...' I usually failed.
Now I listen to Jeremy and Ben, and more often than not I find myself nodding in agreement and thinking: 'Yes, that is exactly how I see the situation' or 'This is exactly where I want the show to go'. And when they keep something from us, it sparks my interest even more because I get the vibe that they know exactly what's going on. They just don't want to give it away yet.
That still says nothing about how the season will actually play out. For that we will have to wait for the actual episodes to come out.
But I'd say, at the very least, Jeremy has successfully passed the first test: Keeping the audience interested in the story, and excited for the new season.

Both he and Edlund know their audience, they know what to say and how to coherently and intelligently express themselves on what to expect for the season, without really revealing anything, but still managing to get the excitement and optimistic level up. And like you said, Gamble didn't really know how to give interviews and it felt like she really didn't understand her audience or even the story being told. Carver does, Edlund does, they know how to handle things like this. They know how to plan and create cohesive storytelling. With everything that's been said, I trust in Carver to know precisely where he's going with this season.
I am still concerned over some things, of course, and it all depends on how well the season is executed. But overall, I am happy with what was given to us.
