After watching the Lost finale last night - hoping for a few more scenes with Mark but that couldn't be expected - I decided to let it sink for a while before I form my opinion. Now, after a good nights sleep, I have to say that I am disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the episode. And it made for a nice, albeit pretty cheesy, finale. For any other show. The thing about Lost is, it was never about the characters for me. Pretty much any other show is, but Lost never was. Sure, there are a few that I adore - like Desmond, Richard, Sawyer, Ben, Jacob to a certain extend - and who I felt for. But overall I always thought that Lost wasn't good with characters. They seemed inconsistent. They'd change their minds from one scene to the next just because it suited the storyline. But I didn't care that much because for me Lost was all about the mysteries and the riddles that I was trying to figure out and wanted to be answered in the end. Not all of them, that was impossible, but the most important one like, what is the Island, how does it heal people, why is it so bad if Smokey leaves, things like that. And, sorry, but some mysterious light at the heart of the island is not an answer. So, yeah, I feel cheated. But fortunately I wasn't into it as much as I am into Supernatural or Doctor Who, so I can basically shrug and move on.

I still enjoyed the show and there are some episodes that I love and will surely watch again: The Constant, Ab Aeterno, Across the Sea. But I have to come to the conclusion that Lost is not an exceptional show, not even a very good one. It's enteraining and it's kind of impressive how they managed to fool everyone into thinking that there would be an actual explanation.

Lost could have done one of two things to become truly amazing. Either answer the big questions in the end making the characters not much more than symbols to deliver their point. Or make the whole show about the characters from the beginning with the mysteries of the Island just forming a background for them to interact in and put them into unfamiliar situaions. But if they really believe that they did the latter, then they have no idea what making a show about the characters means.

It's time to let go and move on.
