It felt like a genuine finale instead of the giant-cliffhanger-usually-to-be-resolved-in-the-first-five-minutes-of-the-new-season we usually get these days.
I've read a theory about Peter that I really liked: That he waited for Scott to become an alpha so he can steal the powers back from him, yes. But also that he tried to push Derek into turning into a beta to get rid of the temptation of stealing it from his nephew.
And while I still hate that overdramatic last scene I guess it makes some amount of sense that this happens now. With both Derek and Cora gone, he once again has nothing left to care about. And no reason to help or just hold back.
So, yeah, holding out hope that despite this scene Peter will be allowed to stay a character and not turn into a cliched mustache-twirling villain.
