My tumblr dash is currently occupied with two Supernatural related things to muse and speculate about. One is potentially spoilery for next week's episode, but I will give a clear warning, so no worries if you only want to read the non-spoilery part.
While overall I thought that the episode was an okay filler, there was one scene that caught my attention from the moment I watched it: Dean's beer bottle that was full one second and empty the next. I never considered Dean's alcoholism a real possibility for an explanation. It just happened to fast.
My very first instinct was to tell Bobby that he is an idiot for not leaving with the reaper. He knows what inevitably happens to you sooner or later if you stay. But I fully expected them to confirm that it is Bobby during the episode. Now that they didn't I'm not sure any more.
My second idea was Castiel, but I can't really picture him drinking Dean's beer. Unless he is already on a clear path to becoming future Castiel. But then he would be human, and therefore could only be invisible if dead, and I just don't seem to be able to make it add up.
I have also seen a few theories about something being wrong with time, but I'm not sure Superantural is (still) that smart.
Bobby still seems like the most likely explanation but I kinda hope it's not him. He doesn't deserve to end up as a vengeful spirit.
There is one other possibility, though:
POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD
(probably not. It's hardly a theory, but, you know, just in case)
The other - unrelated - thing I have seen floating around is from the promo for next weeks episode. I haven't even seen the promo, but apparently this is a screencap from said promo. And what looks like a moment from last year's Castiel promo turns our not to be if you compare the two figures.
Theory is that it might be Gabriel.
One screencap is very little to go on, obviously, so I was about to dismiss the idea, when a few other things came to mind:
1) Mythologically, Gabriel is the one to kill Leviathan.
2) Next weeks episode is about time travel. Every time travel on the show that I remember was caused by angels.
3) The shot looks suspciously like the one with Castiel, just with a different colour and a different person standing there. And if you look closely you can even see wings.
4) Sera Gamble said in an interview - that I can't find right now - that while they don't want to make the civil war in Heaven a big plot point anymore they have ideas for stories featuring individual angels.
5) It would tie nicely with the disappearing beer.
ETA: 6) While trying to figure out how to retrieve his brother, Sam is surprised by the reappearance of an old friend. (from the official episode description)
Every single one of these arguements is extremely weak, I know. And even together they form a very shaky foundation for a theory about how we might get one of our angels back.
Still, I can't help but have this tiny glimmer of hope that it might be true, and that it really is either Gabriel, or - ignoring 1) - maybe even Balthazar.
And then I take a breath and wonder - again - if Supernatural is that smart, and come to the conclusion that I don't really believe it but can't ignore it either.
So without getting my hopes up: Is it next week yet?
END POTENTIAL SPOILERS
