Into the West

Hi Rachel. Bye, Rachel. Honestly, considering how much of a fuss was made about her, she was neither very interesting, nor did she stick around for very long. Another female character wasted. *sighs* Castiel didn't seem to particularly like her, either. The part about her being committed to the cause as an explanation as to why she is his lieutenant, spoke volumes.
She had a point, though, when she told Dean that he only calls Castiel when he needs him, when Castiel is still very busy fighting a freaking war! That really needed to be said, and obviously Cas himself gave up on saying it. So at least some bonus points for Rachel for that.

Castiel looks tired, defeated. He's not even telling the boys that he's busy any more. He just does whatever they ask. Partly guilty conscience, probably, partly knowing that even with the way Dean treats him lately, he's still treating him more like a friend than anyone else save Balthazar. And he knows he'll lose that sooner rather than later, because Dean will find out what he did, and he won't forgive him. It looks like Castiel has already accepted that, and is now treasuring the last moments of their friendship. He's giving the boys all that he can now, as long as he still can, treasuring this little bit of humanity left in his life, that he's come to appreciate. Compared to what Castiel is facing, the boys' life seems almost carefree.

So far, Castiel always gave the impression that his side in the Heavenly war was a unit, everyone wanting the same thing. He never calls himself their leader, but it was always clear that he calls the shots. But now I'm more under the impression, that even his allies aren't completely on his side. Like the only thing they really have in common is not wanting Raphael to take over. So his situation is even worse than I thought, making Balthazar not just his only friend, but actually pretty much his only real, trustworthy ally. Oh, Cas, what have you gotten yourself into?

I wonder if Balthazar knows Castiel's dark secret, whatever it is. Obviously he hasn't only kept it from the Winchesters, but from the other angels as well, which is very worrying. My guess still is a deal with Crowley. And I'm sure it has something to do with human souls. You can see that Castiel is not proud of whatever he did, when Rachel confronts him about it. It almost seems like he wishes he could undo it, like he doesn't believe that the ends justify the means any more himself.

"I'm sorry."
Oh, Cas! *hugs him tight* Look at him! How can anyone still assume that he's turning dark side? I'll never get that. He knows that what he does is not right. He is painfully aware of that, but he simply sees no other choice. He was really just fighting for his life here. It's not like Rachel gave him a chance to explain, or like he killed her to keep his secret. It was her or him. It was self defense. But it hurts him so much, that his actions led to this. That they led him into a situation where he has to fight and kill his own allies. Damn you, Show, for putting my angel through all this.
Balthazar! Where are you? Cas needs you!

That wound from the fight with Rachel scared the hell out of me. Castiel was bleeding Grace. I don't ever want to see that again. I'm a little torn between being relieved and being slightly disappointed in the episode's storytelling that, after some rest, it basically just healed and "only" left him temporarily low on his powers. Just enough to get the boys into trouble.
But for a moment there, when he stumbled back into Bobby's house and drew the sigil to be somewhat save, he looked like he was close to dying. I don't think we've seen him this weak since... ever, actually. Not even when he was practically human.

I kept wondering why he didn't call Balthazar for help, or to bring the boys back. I guess calling Bal would have risked alerting the rest of his troops, and who knows how many angels Rachel told about Castiel's secret. There is no knowing whom Cas can still trust. I'm sure Balthazar won't abandon him, not ever, no matter what he did. But the rest doesn't care about Castiel as a person. And if they feel betrayed by him, they'll declare him their enemy just as quickly as he became their leader.

It was nice to see that Bobby looked genuinely concerned. That it was "we" instantly. Bobby is not Castiel's biggest fan, but he has accepted him as part of their weird little family, and in all the chaos and pain, that is so very nice to see. Falling unconsciously into Bobby's arms is not exactly the hug I was hoping for, but Bobby catching him is a start.
Even if that makes it just more painful when Castiel lies again and claims that Rachel was corrupted by Raphael. He's still an awful liar - mainly because he doesn't wat to lie to his friends - and the only reason I can think of why no one has noticed yet is because they all choose not to notice.

When Bobby agrees to the soul touching, of course he does it for Sam and Dean. But it also means that Bobby trusts Castiel enough to let him go through with it. Castiel asking Bobby again if he really wants to do this, shows that the respect is mutual. I'm afraid all of this is going to fall to pieces soon, but right now these little things, these hints of friendship, are worth a lot.

The look Cas shoots Dean when he tells him that he has to send them back, it's almost nice to see that hint of annoyance there, underneath the pain. Can someone please just finally hug the poor angel? Again: Balthazar! Where are you?

Terrifying thought: If this all somehow comes down to Castiel having to kill Balthazar at the end of the season to win the war... don't you dare, Show, don't you dare!

These are very interesting thoughts.

Yes, it's like he's almost resigned already :(

About why Cas didn't call Balthazar: personally, I thought it was because it was too weak. Teleporting put a great strain on him but it needed to be done, 'cause Castiel needed a safe place. Once there he couldn't do anything else, he was too weak.

I think the only one who knows what Cas is up to is Balthazar. Maybe he even suggested it? IDK, I'm just speculating...

Castiel was very weak. I don't know how difficult it can be for an angel to call another angel. Can they just pray to each other like Dean prays to Cas?
Maybe Bal was busy with some mission and Cas knew he couldn't come. I guess there are a few possible explanations.

I'm sure Balthazar does know a lot more than anyone else. And considering that he was the first angel to buy souls, there is a good chance that he suggested it. Or at least, that Castiel got the idea from him.

[...]like Dean prays to Cas?
[random and OT] I still find it kinda funny that Dean calls this praying. But that's Dean. *smirk* He's kinda, uh, helpless when it comes to praying.

Right. It's late and stuff... *tries to explain her weird thoughts*[/random and OT]

Well, he's calling to an angel for help. Technically, I guess that is praying.

(sighs) All very valid points. I kept thinking, when Cas flew in, if they make us watch Cas die AGAIN, I am going to be very upset. And watching that slowly as opposed to the faster explosions? Even worse. T_T
(pats Cas) I'd let you use my soul to recharge. (nods) Please don't die. (sniffles)

It was terrifying to see him like that, wasn't it? Not just the wound, but the weariness and the pain. And I'm afraid it's only going to get worse in the remaining episodes. I just hope our angel makes it through this, and it'll be worth it in the end. But knowing Supernatural, I have little hope that it's going to be anything close to a happy ending.
