Just a thought...
I have no idea where that just came from but what if, the second time Cas was resurrected, it wasn't God who brought him back but Balthazar?
Balthazar went awol during the war, which I guess means during the Apocalypse. He left and took advantage of the confusion by stealing some of Heaven's weapons. Now, what if one of these weapons can bring an angel back to life? Of course, if Heaven had a weapon like that, why didn't they use it with every angel that died during the war? Maybe this specific weapon can't be used indefinitely. Maybe it can only be used once which is why Heaven did not 'waste' it on simple warriors. But Balthazar used it to save Castiel. They fought side by side for centuries, Bal stood for Cas in Heaven and Cas was the one to bring him utter and complete freedom. So if there is one angel Bal considers worth saving, I'm sure it is Castiel. And maybe Balthazar even believes more in Castiel's fight than he admits, to Cas as well as himself.
Bal is not the one to brag about saving Cas. When he comes back and turns Raphael's vessel to salt there's never anything along the lines of I just saved your life. He turns up, rescues Cas and would be off again if it weren't for the holy fire. I think Bal wants to give the impression that he doesn't care when, really, he cares a lot. At least when it comes to Castiel. So it would be just like Balthazar to resurrect Castiel and never mention that it was him.
Something else that caught my attention: Raphael says that he doubts God will be bringing Cas back this time. How would he know? Because God is missing? He was already missing when Cas was brought back the last time. But maybe that works with my idea. Maybe Raphael knows that this specific weapon went missing, that it was used to resurrect Cas and that it cannot be used again. He just probably doesn't know that it was Bal who stole and used it.
Does that make any sense?
Bal/Cas has really somehow sneaked its way in as my new OTP. I still love Cas/Dean and I love the complicated triangle the whole Dean, Cas and Bal situation promises but if I had to decide - honestly? - I'd push Castiel in Balthazar's general direction. And I'm not even sure any more this will change when (if ever) Dean stops treating Castiel like he's done lately.
By the way, for those of you who don't know: I'm not the type to look for a ship in every show I watch. But once in a while I feel that two characters just have an amazing chemistry and then I don't care if they're male, female, human, alien or angel. Normally, however, that doesn't happen after they had just something like 5 minutes of screen time together.
