My show is trying to kill me

Funny, cute, hot and ripping your heart out. All in one episode. It started like an average episode but I probably should know by now that there is no such thing as an average Supernatural season 2 episode.

To be honest I didn't like that bar at the beginning of the episode at all and I didn't think I'd like anyone who was in that bar. Just completely not my world I guess. You're in San Francisco, guys, if you want to go out got to P3. Seriously! ;)
Nate tries to hit on Maddy but the only part of it that's kinda working is saying "This isn't working at all, is it."
Madison spots her scary ex boyfriend and later walks down the dark and lonely parking lot. And survives. Which is pretty good for being in a Supernatural episode. Especially since Kirt (scary ex boyfriend) is still following her.
The next morning Madison finds Nate in his bureau. Bloody, slashed. The shot of the coffee pot falling on the floor in slow motion is so similar to the coffee mug shot from ImToD, isn't it?

Detective Sam talks to the coroner who tells him that Nate's wounds look like a wolf attacked him and that his heart was missing. Sam already expected that since Nate wasn't the first victim. There where also a few women who fit the pattern: Killed during the week leading up to the full moon, their hearts missing. Dean's really excited that they're hunting a werewolf though I actually never heard of the missing heart part of the legend.

"Okay, sparky, and you know what? After we kill it we can go to Disney Land."

Next move: Talk to Madison.
At her apartment they also meet her neighbour Glen who wears a Mission Church t-shirt and brought casserole - Max'd be so pissed. The boys ask Madison about Nate.

"He got a few Scotch and then he started hitting on everyone in a five mile radius. You know the type."
"Yeah, I do actually."

She also tells them about Kirk who got into a fight with Nate because he thought Nate and Madison where involved and who happened to be at the bar the night Nate died. Which makes Kirk way to obvious to really be the killer. But of course he's Sam and Dean's prime suspect.
That night Madison hears barking and see's Kirk standing on the street staring at her window.

Sam and Dean find Kirk's apartment empty and no sign whatsoever that says "werewolf". Well, except for the scratch marks on the outside wall. Then they hear a shot and around the corner behind a dumpster find a police officer killed by a/the werewolf. Sam calls 911 and they should really leave like really fast. Or have they forgotten that the police is after them?

They check on Madison who is fine but tells them that she saw Kirt outside her apartment. They decide that one of them should stay with Madison. But who?

"Okay, you go, I'll stay."
"Forget that. You go after the creepy ex. I'm gonna hang here with the hot chick."
"Dude, why do you always get to hang out with the girls?"
"Because I'm older."

So Dean plays the "older brother" card. By the way it's not true that Dean always gets to stay with the girls. Just think of Hookman, Provenance of course, Bloodlust sort of...

"No, screw that. We settle this the old fashioned way."

Sam wins two out of three cause Dean always throws out the scissors. But Dean's not stupid. I think he lets Sam win without Sam even noticing.

So Sam's sitting in Madison's apartment like a schoolboy on his first date. So cute! *g*

And Madison just can't resist teasing him and folding her underwear on the table right in front of him so Sam decides to rather sit on the couch.

That moment Sam's phone rings:

"Let me guess: You're sitting on her couch like a stiff trying to think of something to say."

Dean just knows his brother. And its obviously Sam teasing day. Can I join?

"What's she wearing?"
"Bye, Dean."

Maddy joins Sam on the sofa to watch All My Children and though Sam isn't too excited about that at the end of the episode he's hooked (though he doesn't admit it). And the ice is broken.
Sam and Madison are so cute together. I don't see the awesome chemistry Sam had with Sarah. Maddy just can't beat my OTP. But I see that Sam likes her a lot. And I see a lot of sympathy and... respect sounds so distant and that's not what I mean but I hope you get it anyway. Just when Sam tells Maddy that he thinks she's unusual as in impressive his phone rings again. Timing, Dean. Dean tells his brother that he found Kirt and that his eyes are glued. He doesn't tell Sam where he found Kirt and who his eyes are glued on though.

Madison goes to bed and Sam stays in the living room and tells her that she just has to call if anythings wrong cause that's the guy Sam is. Though he might wish he was more like Dean that moment.

Dean's standing on front of Kirt's apartment when a window breaks. Dean rushes upstairs to find Kirt dead and the werewolf bending over him: Madison. He manages to mark her arm with a knife before she knocks him unconscious and flees.

The next morning Dean calls Sam who doesn't really believe him until he sees the mark on Madison's arm. That's when Sam's attitude towards her changes completely. He locks the door, ties her to a chair and his eyes get cold it's almost scary.

It's a little strange that Madison who's known Sam for about a day and now pretty much thinks he's a psycho still seems more concerned about him than about herself. Like Sam can still shut out his feelings but Madison can't. With Madison being so hurt and confused Sam starts to believe that she's not responsible for what she's doing when the wolf inside her takes over. He believes her that she doesn't even know she's a werewolf. Which of course makes this a even more messed up situation.
Sam tries to convince Dean that Madison is in a way innocent. And there we are again: Black and White vs. Shades of Grey.

"She's killing, people."
"But what if she has no control over it?"
"Exactly. She can't control it. Giving that she's telling the truth it doesn't change anything."
"I'm not putting a bullet through some girl's chest who has no idea what's happening."
"Sam, she's a monster and you're feeling sorry for her?"
"Maybe I understand her."

Some girl, huh? Guess it makes the whole thing as little easier to just think of her as "some girl" for the moment. And the parallel between Madison's inner wolf and Sam's destiny is stuck in Dean's head now which now makes it anything but a normal hunt for both of them. Luckily John had a theory that cutting the bloodline by killing the wolf who turned her could cure Madison. It's just a theory but it IS worth a shot. I remember a time (season 1) when saving people was more important than killing ghosts/demons/etc. for both of the boys. But that was when telling the innocent from the monsters was much easier. So now they have to find the werewolf that bit Madison. Luckily she told Sam about being mugged. When they go to her to ask her about it Sam's voice and eyes are way softer again. Maddy tells them that she got mugged (and bitten) about a month ago the same area the female victim's died.
Sam's back to "Madison" instead of "some girl" and Dean sees how important it is for his brother to at least try to save her. So he agrees on going looking for the other werewolf while Sam stays with Madison. But before he goes he makes Sam promise to shoot Madison if she busts loose.

Madison asks Sam to just let her go but of course he can't. Instead he promises her that if the plan works he'll leave and never come back so meeting him won't be more than a bad memory for her. Sam's back in his "People around me tend to get hurt" state of mind which leaves just one conclusion for him: He has to get as far away from them as he can to keep them save. That could also be one of the main reason's why we never saw Sarah again so far even though she was the one to prove to him that people he cares about not always get hurt just because he's around.
When the moon comes up Madison turns but Sam is able to lock her into a closet.

Dean finds the other werewolf and kills it. It's Glen and when he turns back shortly before he dies he has no idea what happened. He's as innocent as Madison. You could say that they could've tried to save him as well by killing the werewolf that turned him. But that guy'd have been as innocent as Maddy and Glen as well. They had to kill some werewolf of the bloodline whether there is a cure or not.

At sunrise Sam opens the closet and tells Madison that she'll never see him again. He looks a little like he's hoping she'd hold him back but when Maddy turns around again after looking at the scratch marks she left in the closet Sam's gone.

A month later (or the next day. I'm not sure. On the one hand full moon is just 3 nights so they'd have to wait a month on the other hand the scratches on Sam's cheek look pretty fresh. *is a little confused*) Sam and Dean are sitting in the Impala watching Madison's apartment to make sure that she's really cured. Madison knocks on the passenger window and invites them in. She believes them now so they sit in her apartment and wait for sunrise, Dean at the table and Sam and Madison on the couch. As much as Dean loves to tease his brother about women he also knows when to stop and he sees how much Sam likes Madison.

And when it turns out that everything is okay (Denial is a great place to be. I like it here) Dean also knows when to leave.

"That was smooth."
"He means well."
"You mean he thinks you're gonna get laid."

And he's right. After a little more talking about why they can't go back and why... screw that!
I could try to write about the next scene but, erm, that'd mean trying to form coherent sentences and, yeah, well...

*rrrrrrrrrr* *stumbles to the bathroom for a cold shower*

Could we just stop the episode like right there. Please? It's so perfect right now and Sam deserves this. But the world obviously gives a crap about what Sam deserves.
When he wakes up again it's dark and... Madison has turned again. Why the hell didn't she turn the night before then? Notice that she doesn't attack him at all. She just hisses at him and leaves.

Sam rushes to the motel (after calling Bobby hoping that he knew cure). Dean promises Sam that they'll find Madison but he also tells him that he thinks they have to face the truth: There is no way to save Madison.

"I hate to say it. She's a sweet girl but part of her is..."
"Evil?"
"yeah."
"Yeah, that's what they say about me, Dean. So me you won't kill but her you'll just gonna blow away."

I see why Sam is upset. It's not that he's really angry with Dean. I think he knows Dean's right but of course he doesn't want to see it since that'd mean to give up on Madison. And the his destiny makes him part evil, too, it's something to cling to this time. Like if he can be saved Madison can be saved as well. But it's different. First of all Sam hasn't done anything evil yet and we don't know for sure if he ever will. So Dean still has time to find a way to save him (of course Dean wouldn't kill him if it was a comparable situation). And as much as Sam likes (likes, because saying he loves her'd be to strong a word imho) Maddy he's known her for a few days while Dean's looked out for his brother and kept him save all his life... I don't think you can really compare that.

Maddy calls from a phone booth. She doesn't know where she is and she's scared. Sam and Dean pick her up an drive her home. She doesn't remember anything. Dean tells her (and in a way Sam) the truth: There is no cure. And locking her up is not really an option. But in the end it's Madison's own decision. Accepting it when Sam can't yet:

"So I guess that's all there is to it then."
"Stop it! Don't talk like that."
"Sam, I don't wanna hurt anyone else. I don't wanna hurt you."

When she hands him the gun it's the perfect mirror image to Sam (Meg) giving the gun to Dean in BuabS. And Dean notices that. But I think he's more concerned about Sam and what this is doing to him.

"I can't do it myself. I need you to help me."
"Madison, no."
"Sam, I'm a monster."
"You don't have to be. We can find a way, alright? I can. I'm gonna save you."
"You tried. I know you tried. This is all there is left. Help me, Sam. I want you to do it. I want it to be you."
"I can't."
"I don't wanna die. I don't. But I can't live like this. This is the way you can save me. Please. I'm asking you to save me."

Dean walks over to them and carefully takes the gun from Sam without saying a word. And I'm close to crying again. The look in Dean's eyes. He's willing to give his soul for his little brother if that'd make it just a little easier for Sam.

Sam goes to the kitchen and Dean follows him. I love that the last scene is between the brothers. OMG! Sammy! *sobs*

"Sam... I'm sorry."
"No, you're right. She's right."
"Sammy, I got this one. I'll do it."
"She asked me to."
"You don't have to."
"Yes, I do. Please. Just wait here."

Dean'd do anything for Sam but there's just nothing he can do this time. He can't protect his little brother this time and that's actually the worst part. I read that some people think Dean is afraid that if Sam is able to shoot Maddy to save her he may have to shoot Sam some day to save him as well. But I don't think so. I don't think Dean thinks about that at all right there and then. As I said before there's still a huge difference between those two situations and right now this is just about Sam. Dean sees him suffer and he can't help and that has to be so hard to bear. And I think that's where this single tear comes from. The tear that completely breaks me every single time I see it. I mean, seeing Sam like that does the main part. I want to help him and hug him and make the pain go away. But it's that tear is that's just too much. *whimpers*

The shot comes shortly after Sam left the room. I guess if Sam had waited any longer he'd not have been able to do it. Showing Dean the whole time is really great filming-wise but so, so mean. Nothing can be worse than my imagination. And Dean flinching at the shot...

That show's gonna kill me one day. It stole my soul and I'm afraid I won't get it back in one piece. *coils up in a corner and sobs*
