A Good Friend

I need to talk about the scene some more. Yes that one.
"In the words of a good friend, bite me!"
This was perfect, in every way. This was everything I never dared to hope for, everything I needed, and more.
It was subtle. I love that it was subtle, because so was their relationship. Castiel and Balthazar never needed big gestures - not that there weren't any. Handing over the weapons was pretty damn huge.
They could say everything they needed to say with a smile, with the other's name, with a simple look. And Castiel can say just as much with a simple "a good friend", back when he learned that Balthazar was still alive, and now.
This line says so much about how Castiel is dealing with Balthazar's death, and with knwoing that he was the one who killed him. He's made his peace with what happened. Everything else still weights on him, but not Balthazar. Why? Because Castiel knows that Balthazar doesn't blame him, that Balthazar would never want Castiel to suffer because of him, that Balthazar forgives him. He knows because he knows Balthazar.
And more than that. The situation, and the way in which Castiel brings up Balthazar, tells me that he is drawing strength from his brother's memory. In all the chaos and pain and guilt, Balthazar still gives him a place where he can find some peace, a home while he is homeless, maybe even someone he can pray too, because he knows Balthazar will listen.
I like to believe - and always have ever since the season 6 finale - that a part of Balthazar stayed with Castiel after his death, that traces of Balthazar's grace are still eternally bound to Castiel's.
I like to believe that Balthazar has turned into something like a guardian angel for Cas. In a way, that's who he always was. Balthazar. "Protect the King", the man who would be king. He couldn't possibly have a more fitting name.
Whether who is with Castiel now really is Balthazar, or just Castiel's memories of him... both and neither.
Point is, that this line convinces me that the only reason Castiel never mentions Balthazar is because he doesn't need to. The only ones who need to know are Castiel and Balthazar, and they know.
So if this was the last time Balthazar is ever mentioned on the show, I'm okay with that. Because this short, subtle moment told me everything I needed to know. And it told me that everything between my two angels is as well as I could possibly have hoped for. And it told me that Castiel will never truly be alone.
Brothers, friends, grace mates.
