Regrettable things

Okay, writing about the episode before I watch the promo, because my mind kinda is on overload already.

First of all: CROWLEY!!! Favourite demon, how I missed you!
Judging from the look Cas gave him, I'm probably going to curse him in every language I can think of soon, but I'm still so, so happy to have him back.
I was 99% sure Crowley would be back, ever since the episode he died. Next week, though, not this. For his return this week I was only spoiled minutes before I watched the episode. Mark Sheppard surely is a sneaky bastard. Can't wait to meet him in person again in two weeks. <3

Anyway, back to the episode:

The boys and Bobby are preparing for the final confrontation with Eve, and finally, finally Dean is the one to acknowledge that Cas may be busy with more important things than helping them out. That's so incredibly good to hear. It's okay that they call him either way. Or, well, they don't call him at all, actually. Cas just turns up to ask them about the progress concerning Eve. See. guys, that's how working together works.

"Cas, get out of my ass." - "I was never in your..."
Seriously, Show, what's with all the fanservice lately. Not that I'm complaining. It's nice to have something that does have me laughing out loud in the midst of all the heartbreak and drama. The look on Dean's and Cas' face, when they realise how this sounds, are priceless.
Cas looks very uncomfortable, too, and very, very quickly changes the subject. Stupid, blind hunter. *smacks Dean on the head*

I really like the dynamics of Sam, Dean, Cas and Bobby just working together as a team. This show would work incredibly well with four main characters. Just saying. Even with everything that's going on in the background, I enjoyed this aspect through the entire episode. Different views on things, different dynamics: Dean and Cas, Sam and Bobby, Dean and Sam, Cas and Bobby... it gives the show something new and fresh, despite working only with characters we've known for a long time. I wish we could have more of that. In season 7, maybe?

Lenore! It's so great to see her again. I love it when they remember their past. When they bring characters back that we haven't seen in a while and to see where they ended up, particularly if it's one of the few great female characters they had. Unfortunately, that usually ends in the death of these characters, and Lenore is no exception.
When Castiel kills her, yes, it is quick and a little ruthless, and it does show how the war is changing him. But if killing Maddison was the right thing to do, the so was this. She would have killed again, and other than Sam and Dean, or even we as an audience, Cas has no emotional connection to Lenore whatsoever. He acknowledges that she's, strictly speaking, not evil, and he respects her wish. He does what Sam and Dean couldn't do, or only with much more hesitation.

And then off to Grants Pass, the place of the big showdown. Where Cas is "unplugged", as Eve will phrase it later.

"Without your power you're basically just a baby in a trench coat."
Okay, I know Dean. I know that Dean is giving everyone crap sometimes, that's just part of who he is. But this? I mean, wow, Dean, way to be a dick. Basically he just told Cas that he is worthless except for his angelic powers, when Cas has proved time and time again, that he still has a lot to offer, even if you take their "friendship" out of the equation. I really thought things may be looking up a bit in the Dean treating Cas like shit department.
That look Cas gives Dean as soon as he isn't looking any more, he's really hurt. I'm not trying to blame the path Castiel is going down on Dean, not at all. What he's doing is Castiel's responsibility alone. But having a real friend, besides Balthazar, someone who calls him on his bullshit without trampling on his feelings wouldn't hurt.

I know, I'm probably not exactly fair and I am not trying to suggest that Dean doesn't care. I'm just being protective of my angel, and hurt by the way Dean continues to treat him, not just this episode, but the entire season. I want their profound bond back.

I also do see that Castiel can probably be a little annoying when he's powerless. He's confused, and everything moves forward incredibly slow, and it's just generally unpleasant for him, losing control over the situation like this. No one likes his not being able to do much to help less than Castiel himself. And it makes him cranky. Particularly, when people around him won't stop pointing out to him how useless he is. Which he isn't, by the way.

Jefferson Starships? Oh, Dean. So proud of his monster naming skills.
See, I still like Dean, even when I constantly have a go at him for the way he treats his angel.

Castiel in handcuffs. That's something you don't see every day. "This is not what it looks like"? Balthazar, stop showing Cas movies, they're not exactly helping him figuring out real life on Earth.

I want to draw hearts around that scene where Dean comes to Castiel's rescue. This short moment of silent communication "Are you okay?" before they're both back fighting side by side. Why can't we have more of that again?

The two boys... I am with Sam and Dean here. Taking care of them is important. If you stop caring about single lives, than what are you even still fighting for. That's something I think Castiel has still to learn. I do see Castiel's point too. I know where he's coming from. He's said before - all the way back in 6x03 - that he doesn't have the luxury to care. And roughly two years of not having that luxury trained his ability to hide the urge to care well, even from himself.
Cas is not demanding in that scene, he's more confused as to why Dean is putting the lives of these two kids before the lives of millions. I wish someone would take the time to explain it to him. Help him take a step back and remember exactly what he's fighting for, and show him why that means that every single life counts.

But once again Castiel stays behind, hurt, confused and feeling alone. The rift between Dean and Cas is growing by the minute. I'm afraid if Castiel loses his connection with Dean, he loses everything that connects him to humanity. And that scares me, because Cas does need someone to keep him grounded.

I'm glad Bobby is there, showing sympathy. I really like the friendship that's starting to form between those two. It's like Bobby understands Castiel better than Dean does these days. They both deeply care about the Winchester boys, and they both know what it feels like not always getting much back from them. They both know that Sam and Dean have their hearts in the right place, but that they also obviously believe that the universe revolves around them. Still, that can be hard to accept and deal with, when you're an angel in desperate need of a true human friend.

Castiel torturing their captive does break my heart a little, simply because it is too close to the old Heavenly order Castiel was and is fighting to change. It's like he has to turn into the very thing he's fighting to stand a chance to win. And that's exactly why he needs someone to help him back when it's all over. He is slowly losing his grip, but he is still struggling, even if he tries to hide it.

I see what you're doing there, Show, with the whole business of Eve just rising up because Crowley tries to collect souls. You're trying to let the blame for everything that's happening this season ultimately fall on Cas. But that's not working, dear Show. You can't blame my angel for a power struggle between the King of Hell and Monster Mommy. Poor Eve, being pushed into this against her will, when she's really just a nice girl. Erm.. no, sweetheart, not buying that.

If anyone still needs proof that Castiel is not turning evil - Do you? Really? - Castiel crying out Dean's name when Eve bites him should tell you how much he cares. How much Dean means to him. Dean is his weak spot, and I'm afraid Crowley probably knows that.
Also, BAMF!Cas using his angelic powers will never not be hot, beautiful and just generally amazing. And Cas was actually right about the boys, too. Cute angel is cute when he's annoyed.

Anyway, Eve, who never really felt as much of a threat to me is gone, handing the position of the big bad back over to our beloved King of Hell. I very much approve of that.

Cas is getting much better at lying. I'm not sure I like that. And why is he putting so much emphasis on being an angel? We all know that, Cas. Did that sound odd to anyone else?
It's nice to see that Dean is the one least willing to believe that Cas is working with Crowley. Even if he's wrong, unfortunately.

"Really, Cas. This is getting ridiculous. How many times am I gonna have to clean up your messes?"

I expected some kind of deal between Castiel and Crowley. I'm still trying to figure out what the exact arrangement is, though. Obviously they both want/need souls. But logically that would make them competitors, not allies. How can they help each other? Not to mention that it wouldn't make sense for Castiel to make a deal that helps him defeat Raphael, if it hands that much power over to Crowley. Unless Castiel believes that defeating Crowley, even with the power of those souls, will be easier than defeating Raphael. Either that, or Crowley has some leverage on Castiel we don't know about yet.

Teaser for next week's episode now. *scared*
